What is MinRole?
MinRole is a SharePoint feature that allows you to deploy a SharePoint server to a farm without having to first configure it based on its role. Instead, SharePoint configures it for you through the Configuration Wizard. You can select a Single-Server Farm role or one of the following Multi-Server Farm roles:
- Distributed Cache
You can also use MinRole to deploy a SharePoint server to a farm through the Set-SPServer PowerShell cmdlet.
Using a MinRole can make your SharePoint deployments easier, as you no longer have to worry about which services to enable on a server. It can also reduce the risk of making misconfigurations during deployment. MinRole can further improve the performance and reliability of your SharePoint servers, as the topology is based on knowledge that Microsoft has acquired from running SharePoint Online in their own data centers.
You can manage MinRole either through PowerShell or the Central Administration site.
