What are Deployment Rings?
A deployment ring is a Windows 10 pilot concept that is somewhat akin to how deployment groups were used with earlier versions of the operating system. You use deployment rings to separate your devices into different deployment timelines. Using these rings can reduce the risk of issues resulting from updates to Windows, by gradually deploying updates throughout your organization.
An example of setting this up is creating deployment rings called Preview, Broad and Critical. In the Preview ring, you deploy updates to a few machines for evaluation. Then, you broadly deploy updates to devices in the Broad ring and monitor this for feedback. Finally, you deploy updates to devices that are critical in nature in the Critical ring.
In general, the creation of deployment rings within your organization is a one-time process. But it is recommended that IT departments periodically review the rings to make sure that they are functionally in an optimal manner.
