How Do Meraki MS Switches Differ from Traditional Switches?

The Cisco Meraki MS switch is an industry-first switch that can be configured through a cloud-native switch management and configuration platform. This cloud-native platform allows users to configure thousands of ports instantly, monitor all network traffic, and configuring physical hardware on the fly all through the single pane-of-glass management platform provided by Cisco Meraki. This centralized switch approach allows for higher degrees of access control as a Maeraki admin can configure unique access control at the software layer through this cloud-native platform.

Meraki supports layer 3 style switching where packets are sent to a specific next-hop IP address rather than sent to a specific switch power based on the MAC address. Layer 2 switch routing required information about the destination MAC address, resolved through an Address Resolution Protocol or (ARP). By using Cisco's Meraki MS Switch, organizations can gain incredible functionality and control over their layer 3 routing layer; all configured seamlessly from the cloud.
