What is Object Storage?
Object storage is a data storage architecture that is commonly used in many cloud environments. Unlike file storage, which manages its data within a file hierarchy, object storage manages its data using objects. These objects reside in a flat DNS-drive address space and include not only the data itself but also extensive metadata and a unique global identifier (typically a URL).
Object storage allows you to store a large amount of unstructured data, such as documents and media files. It also allows you to scale this storage as needed, often at a lower cost than file storage. Its metadata further allows for greater classification of data and better analytics. Finally, it can offer faster data retrieval than what is possible with file storage.
Many popular Platforms as a Service (PaaS) offer object storage services, such as AWS S3 (Simple Storage Service) and Google Cloud Storage. These services are particularly useful for application developers.
