What is vCenter Server?
vCenter Server is software that provides centralized management of VMware vSphere architecture through its ability to provision, configure and monitor it. With vCenter, you can manage all your ESXi hosts and virtual machines (VMs) from one location. You can also use it to view and analyze critical components of your configuration.
vCenter can do the following:
Integrate other hypervisors into vSphere, such as Hyper-V
Perform non-disruptive patching in both ESXi hosts and VMs
Manage pools of VMs and their hosts in clusters
Apply a host profile from one ESXi host to another
Link multiple vCenter servers for the purpose of sharing resources.
Dynamically allocate resources to VMs based on rules you define
Produce audit trails of configuration changes.
vCenter further provides APIs that allow you to include its functionality within your applications.
It comes in three editions: Standard, Foundation and Essentials. Which you choose depends on how many ESXi hosts you need to manage and what kind.
