What is Policy-Based Routing?
Policy-based routing is an IP routing strategy that routs data packets within a network based on unique predefined policies. Often these policies will specify parameters such as source IP address, destination IP address, target port, type of protocol supported by divide, packet size, or other policy filter criteria.
The benefit admins gain over implementing a policy-based routing scheme is the control over data flow they can achieve. By setting up policy-based routing criteria, admins can better control and manage the flow of packets traversing their internal network.
One of the greatest advantages that come out of policy-based routing is the ability to prioritize certain applications. By configuring policy-based routing rules that influence critical applications, admins can gain unique granular control over how applications send and receive data within their environment, allowing for control and optimization over how specific applications and services are interacted with.
