Shawn Powers just completed his new LPI Linux LPIC-1 and CompTIA Linux+ Prep course. This five-hour course introduces learners to Linux for Networking, System Administration, DevOps, and more. This training also prepares you for either the LPIC-1 or the CompTIA Linux+ Prep passing either exam-set earns you both certs.

We talked to Shawn to find out more about the value of learning Linux, his design of the course and his tips for conquering.

Q: Why should companies train their IT professionals in this technology?

The demand for Linux professionals has been steady for several years now, and shows no signs of letting up. Training existing in-house talent is an incredible way to compete against the shortfall of available Linux experts for hire.

Q: From a student-perspective, what did you keep in mind when creating this course?

Most people interested in learning Linux come from some sort of technical background. It makes for an interesting situation where my students are already highly intelligent. It's not a, "brilliant teacher" and "lowly student" relationship; it's just a couple of geeks learning Linux together.

Q: Any outside-of-the-box tips for students to get the most out of your course?

Read the descriptions. I tried really hard to make the content of the nuggets glaringly obvious from the descriptions. If you already know and understand everything in the description, you can probably safely skip the nugget and move on. (You might miss some of my fabulous drawings, but I guarantee none of my drawings are on the exam!)

Q: What's one real-world application someone can expect to use, thanks to this course?

Honestly, just having the ability to use Linux with comfort and ease is an invaluable real world skill.

Q: What was your favorite Nugget to create?

The Nugget on IP Subnetting. It's a very difficult concept to understand, but once you get it, it's just awesome. (I'm not sure most people will share my enthusiasm over IP subnetting, but it's one of my favorite topics to teach!)

Q: What roadblocks did you come across when creating this training and how did you overcome them?

A few of the exam objectives for LPIC-1 & Linux+ are fairly outdated. Even the version 4 update contains some skills that haven't been in mainstream use for almost a decade. It was a challenge to teach those objectives in a way that was still educational, and not just "teaching to the test." I think I succeeded, but sometimes it was a lesson in "why we don't do it this way anymore."
