As more companies rely on technology, the demand for IT professionals who can keep networks and data safe from threats is increasing. Keith Barker recently completed his "Cisco CCNA Security 210-260 IINS" course.

The 38-video course prepares learners for Cisco's revamped CCNA Security exam by covering security essentials such as port security, zone-based firewalls, cryptography, and more. This training is ideal for those who are new to IT security, as well as seasoned IT pros.

We caught up with Keith to get his thoughts on the course, and how learners can make the most of his latest training.

Q: Why should companies train their IT professionals in this technology? What value does it bring?

Understanding the concepts of a secure infrastructure, along with the tools of implementing one, are both important skills that IT professionals can use to benefit the networks and systems they work on.

Q: From a student-perspective, what did you keep in mind when creating this course?

I wanted every student who wants to learn Cisco Security to be able to build a home lab and go hands-on to build their skills and reinforce what we cover in the Nuggets together.

Q: Any out-of-the-box tips for students to get the most out of your course?

It isn't required, but taking these Nuggets in order may benefit the learner. That isn't too far "out of the box," but that's what just came to me when I thought about the question. Also, consider how using the security methods taught and demonstrated throughout the course could reduce risk and the likelihood of a comprise.

Q: What's one real-world application someone can expect to use, thanks to this course?

Here are 4: Layer 2 Port Security, routing authentication, VPNs, and firewalls.

Q: What was your favorite Nugget to create?

The ASA integration. Using 9.x of the OS for the ASA was a major happy-dance moment for me because so many people have asked for how to do that in a home lab. It took several days to get that one dialed in, and now it is easily done by someone who is watching and learning from our videos.

Q: What's the ONE thing you hope learners take away from this training?

Learn with the intent to really know the technology. Practice and verify everything that is possible, hands on. Enjoy the journey, remember to breathe, and have fun!
