What Should Project Managers Do About Outside Influences?
An enterprise environment constantly is acted upon by environmental factors. These environmental factors can be frustrating for any project manager since they have extremely limited control over their influence. What environmental factors do project managers face though?
Environmental factors can come from both internal and external sources. Internal influences might consist of things like the business culture, organizational structure, and internal politics. External factors include forces such as government agencies, laws and regulations, and market conditions.
It's important to note that project managers have little influence over environmental factors. They can exert their influence to shift these factors to some degree, but at best, that influence will be limited.
Successful project managers will consider these environmental factors when planning and executing the project lifecycle. Not considering environmental factors, like local laws and regulations, can prevent a project from completing successfully.
