What is Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)?
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) is a service that lies at the foundation of what AWS offers. It gives you the ability to run applications on the cloud through a remote virtual machine (VM), which you can scale depending on your needs. This means that you can increase (or decrease) the amount of CPU, storage and memory that your application requires as demand for it changes over time.
Each VM running on EC2 is called an instance. By using these instances, you don't need to buy, configure and manage your own hardware. AWS does this for you, so that you can focus on your applications while paying on a subscription basis for the resources that you consume.
AWS charges for instances based on a number of factors, which includes the size of the instance, the physical region in which it was installed, its operating system, and how many hours it ran during a given time period.
