What is Enterprise State Roaming?
With the introduction of Windows 8.1, Microsoft invested in new tools for the enterprise environment to help IT pros manage end-users' systems and profiles. Among these tools is a mechanism called Enterprise State Roaming. These tools were later enhanced with the introduction of Windows 10 and later Microsoft Autopilot. There are a few things that IT pros need to be aware of before depending on Enterprise State Roaming, though.
First, ESR isn't available unless businesses subscribe to Azure Active Directory Premium. It's not available for lower-tier subscriptions or product SKUs. Likewise, devices must have the Windows 10 Creator's Update installed to take advantage of ESR, too.
So, what does ESR do?
Enterprise State Roaming syncs certain data from user's profiles across devices. This data includes:
· Internet Explorer settings
· Edge Browser settings
· Language preferences
· Ease of access features
· Other Windows settings
· Universal Windows App application data that is stored in the user's roaming folder
Note that the information synced between devices is limited. Depending on what requirements an organization has for applications that users need to perform their job functions, businesses may also want to implement user experience virtualization as well. UE-V can handle the data transfer of some applications and application data that ESR is not able to.
With the implementation of ESR and UE-V, IT admins could potentially have a new device up and running for end-users in as little as one hour. This significantly reduces the time to deployment in many circumstances.
