A Brief Introduction to Windows Information Protection

Controlling how data is used and viewed by businesses can be difficult. Sometimes businesses need to do things like share sensitive data with potential customers, but those organizations need to be able to control what happens with that data and how it is used. Microsoft 365 includes mechanisms like Windows Information Protection to assist with this process.

Windows Information Protection helps organizations control how data can be viewed, printed, marked-up, etc… These Windows Information Protection features can be used within existing Office 365 tools like OneDrive for Business or SharePoint. It should be noted that these features are only available with the enterprise versions of Office 365 (Eg, E1, E3, E4, and E5 plans).

One last thing IT professionals need to be aware of is that the Windows Information Protection features work best with native Microsoft document types. That's because these file types can be opened directly in the browser. These access restriction features work with documents like PDFs, but PDFs may need a 3rd party application installed on the recipient’s computer that supports IMR features. Microsoft suggests converting these filetypes to native Office 365 document formats when using Windows Information Restriction features with them.
