What is Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP)?
Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) is a feature that is found on network appliances such as switches and wireless access points, which allows you to install the device without having technicians do it onsite. The way it works is that a vendor delivers the device to an organization, which then physically places the device on their site and powers it up, at which time ZTP configures it and connects it to the vendor's management system.
By using ZTP, you can significantly reduce the lead time for provisioning a new device as well as the number of person-hours spent performing the provisioning. ZTP can also greatly reduce configuration errors caused by human error.
ZTP is advantageous when you have sites without IT staff. It is also useful for devices that are installed in home-offices.
It should be noted that not all ZTP implementations are truly "zero touch." Some require "some touch" or "minimal touch."
