OLTP vs OLAP Databases: What's the Difference?

In the enterprise environment data is key. The way organizations store data is through databases. That data is then used in a variety of ways such as performing analytics or storing customer records. Because of how important that data is, businesses need to take great care in planning how it is organized and processed. So, database administrators need to understand the differences between OLTP and OLAP.

OLTP stands for online transaction process. This is a high-level concept for the mechanisms in which data is retrieved from various sources, organized, and stored in a database. Those sources can be something like pulling data from an API or data entered by a user such as banking information.

OLAP stands for online analytical processing. OLAP is a high-level concept for performing complex queries against stored data. This is how database administrators and data miners pull data from a database to analyze it and create things like information dashboards.

Understanding how the principles of OLTP and OLAP work are fundamentals of database design and information storage. Both concepts create a roadmap that system administrators use to design how complex data storage systems work and communicate with each other.
