Application Aware Policies in the SD-WAN Can Improve Service Levels
Software-defined networking has become much more powerful in the enterprise environment. With businesses spanning long distances, network engineers need a way to control network flow through their wide area network (WAN). One of the tools they can use to do that is application-aware policies.
Application-aware policies recognize data sent to and from applications themselves. Networking equipment is smart enough to understand that data belongs to a specific application at the layer 7 level instead of analyzing network traffic at a lower level. With that understanding, the network can intelligently route traffic through different parts of the WAN to maintain a specified service level.
Application-aware policies for the SD-WAN can:
- Lower bandwidth costs
- Improve application performance without upgrading bandwidth
- Improve application reliability and consistency
- Simplify IT management
To effectively use application policies on a software-defined WAN, network administrators will need to understand how to build these policies, how to build application lists, how to apply application policies, and how to verify the effects of application policies.
