What is SD-WAN?
Over the past decade, organizations have run into limitations with the traditional WAN or Wide Area Network design. Traditionally WAN was used for organizations looking to support communication between offices or branches through the MPLS protocol. As organizations began to utilize more cloud resources and widely adopt the SaaS model, they found the traditional WAN model to provide less-than-optimal performance for users.
SD-WAN is also known as Software-defined Wide Area Network, is the software abstraction model of the traditional MPLS technology. This architectural design virtualizes the network infrastructure built on the underlying physical hardware that provides the foundation for SD-WAN.
By moving from the traditional WAN model, organizations can benefit from increased bandwidth at a lower cost, scalability into the public or private cloud, centralized management of the virtualized network layer, and improved performance for organizations with multiple locations, branches or a cloud presence.
