What is Overlay Management Protocol (OMP)?
Overlay Management Protocol (OMP) is a protocol that lets you establish and maintain Cisco SD-WAN control planes. It allows you to orchestrate overlay network communication, such as connectivity between network sites, service chaining and VPN topologies. It also allows you to distribute not only service-level routing data and other location mappings, but also data plane security parameters. Finally, it can give you centralized control and distribution of your routing policy.
OMP is enabled by default on vSmart controllers and vEdge routers. This means that you don't need to configure these devices for OMP when you want to exchange routing, policy and management data between them. The devices will automatically instantiate the OMP peering sessions, with the system IP addresses becoming the IP endpoints of the OMP session.
It should be noted that OMP creates a full mesh topology by default, and it does not run between Edge routers.
