What are SD-WAN Policies and How Do They Affect SD-WAN Devices?
SD-WAN Policies govern data traffic flow and configure routing information for devices within an SD-WAN overlay network. SD-WAN policies are broken into two major categories: a Routing Policy and a Data Policy.
A Routing Policy applies rules and configuration over the flow of routing within a network's control pane. This type of policy provides traditional routing policies associated with BGP or OSPF routing protocols. A Data Policy, in comparison, affects the flow of data within a network's data pane.
Further, both of these policies can be configured into a centralized manner, or a localized manner, where a centralized policy will affect network-wide routing and a local policy will affect site-local network routing. In building out these policies, organizations can uniquely define how routing and data are configured within the SD-WAN overlay network, providing granular configuration and control over their network.
