CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst CySA+ (CS0-004)

Security operations break down when every analyst investigates, prioritizes, and escalates differently. This CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst CySA+ (CS0-004) course gives IT Directors and Security Team Leads a shared analyst playbook for detection, vulnerability management, and incident response, aligned to the CySA+ certification.

It is built for SOC analysts, vulnerability management staff, incident responders, and infrastructure practitioners moving into security operations. Learners work through logging architecture, OS hardening, and enterprise access controls, then move into malicious activity indicators, malware and script analysis, regex, threat intelligence and hunting, vulnerability scoring and reporting, structured incident response, and after-action review. A dedicated module covers AI in security operations, including prompt injection, data and model poisoning, and AI usage policies.

At roughly 20 hours of video across 23 skills, the course can be assigned over several weeks without pulling analysts off shift for full days. Training Managers can use CBT Nuggets playlists to sequence modules by role and team reporting to track progress across the security team.

For IT leaders

What IT leaders need to know before assigning this course

For IT leaders: Security teams face heavy log and alert volume. Inconsistent triage, case handoffs, and reporting create audit exposure and slow incident response. This CySA+ (CS0-004) course gives your SOC a shared operating model. It runs from logging architecture and threat hunting through incident response, after-action review, and vulnerability management reporting.

  • Role fit: Intermediate security analysts, SOC staff, and practitioners focused on vulnerability management or incident response. Team Leads can use it to align analysts of mixed experience on one process.
  • Time investment: About 20 hours across 23 skills, most under an hour each. That fits two or three sessions per week alongside on-call duties.
  • Risk and compliance framing: Covers standard processes, playbooks versus runbooks, case handoff documentation, root cause analysis, and where attack frameworks sit relative to regulations and statutes. These are useful inputs for audit readiness.
  • Change management: Lessons on standardizing security operations, infrastructure as code, and requiring AI-assisted analysis to cite supporting evidence help teams adopt new tooling without losing rigor. Plan time for analysts to map the course's playbook and runbook concepts to your own procedures.

Hands-on virtual labs let analysts practice investigations and scans outside production. They include Security Onion with Snort, Suricata, and Zeek, an Active Directory IAM environment, and vulnerability scanning exercises.

Team Impact

How this training helps your team succeed

Security teams complete this training to turn alerts into decisions faster and close the gaps that lead to repeat incidents. The course is built on realistic SOC scenarios, not just definitions.

In one lab, analysts work a case inside Security Onion. They review captured packets, confirm a malicious file download by its hash, and record the next step to isolate and clean the host. In another scenario, a SIEM flags an active SSH session to a production database server from an unrecognized external IP. Learners then trace the root cause and capture lessons learned in an after action review.

  • Faster, more consistent triage: Analysts learn to validate that an alert is real, confirm the evidence, and follow standard playbooks and runbooks. Shift handoffs then preserve case context and open questions.
  • Fewer blind spots in vulnerability data: Teams compare credentialed and uncredentialed scans, factor in VLAN segmentation and point-in-time limits, and flag unpatched legacy systems such as Windows XP before attackers find them.
  • Shared language for adversary behavior: Mapping activity to tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) and the MITRE ATT&CK framework gives analysts a common way to brief stakeholders and prioritize response.
  • Safer adoption of AI and automation: Analysts learn to ask AI tools specific, bounded questions about logs and to require cited supporting events, which helps catch hallucinations. The course also shows how peer-reviewed infrastructure as code (IaC) produces repeatable, approved changes.

The result is a security operations team that documents its work, learns from each incident, and reports on vulnerability management with confidence.

After completion

Capabilities your team walks away with

Knowledge

  • How cloud-native and hybrid infrastructure differ from on-prem environments, including why ephemeral resources can disappear before an investigation begins
  • Tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) and how the MITRE ATT&CK framework maps adversary objectives such as initial access, persistence, credential access, discovery, and exfiltration
  • How playbooks, runbooks, and standardized case handoffs support consistent SOC operations and process improvement
  • Securing operational technology (ICS/SCADA) with segmentation, jump servers, app allow listing, asset inventory, and configuration backups
  • How to use AI-assisted log analysis responsibly by asking bounded questions and requiring cited supporting events to catch hallucinations
  • The incident response lifecycle, from preparation, scope, and SLAs through after action review and root cause analysis

Ability

  • Work a case in Security Onion with Snort, Suricata, and Zeek: review captured packets, add file hashes as observables, and document next steps such as isolating the host
  • Navigate IAM platforms such as Active Directory to review organizational units and user accounts, including disabled defaults
  • Run credentialed and non-credentialed vulnerability scans and spot blind spots caused by segmentation and VLANs, plus point-in-time limitations
  • Build a fault tree and root cause analysis from a realistic scenario, such as unauthorized SSH access to a production database server
  • Validate infrastructure-as-code changes through peer review and testing before deployment so changes stay repeatable
  • Tie incident findings to vulnerability management reporting and administrative and technical controls

Frequently Asked Questions

Who on my security team should be assigned this CySA+ course?

It fits SOC analysts, vulnerability management staff, incident responders, and infrastructure practitioners moving into security operations. It is intermediate, professional-level training, so it works best for staff who already have hands-on security or infrastructure experience.

How much time does each learner need to complete the course?

The curriculum totals roughly 20 hours of video across 23 skills, with most modules running 45 to 65 minutes. That structure makes it practical to assign over several weeks alongside normal operational duties.

Which certification does this course map to?

The course aligns to the CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst CySA+ CS0-004 exam. It covers security operations, vulnerability management, incident response, and reporting topics, including a module on AI in security operations.

How can Training Managers roll this out and track progress across the team?

Training Managers can use CBT Nuggets playlists to sequence modules by role, for example prioritizing vulnerability modules for vulnerability management staff. Team reporting gives IT leaders visibility into progress across the security team.

Does the course help with governance and post-incident improvement, not just detection?

Yes. Modules cover after-action review, vulnerability management reporting, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement, and the AI module addresses governance topics such as usage policies, audit trails, data provenance, and accountability for AI decisions.
