VMware vSphere 6.5 with 6.7 Updates FAQs: Cost, Training, Value

What's the underlying technology tested on the VCP6.5-DCV exam 2V0-621?

2V0-621 is a retired exam that tested a virtualization specialist on implementing, managing and troubleshooting a vSphere v6.5 infrastructure. The retired VCP6.5-DCV certification and 2V0-621 both covered an out-dated version of VMware's virtualization platform. VMware retired the VCP6.5-DCV and its exam 2V0-621 because a more recent version of vSphere (version 7) was released, and both the 2V0-621 and VCP6.5-DCV relate only to version 6.5.

Is the VMware Certified Professional 6.5 – Data Center Virtualization (VCP6.5-DCV) exam retired?

Yes, the VMware Certified Professional 6.5 – Data Center Virtualization (VCP6.5-DCV) exam 2V0-621 is retired. VMware retired the 2V0-621 on August 30, 2019 along with the 6.5 Data Center Virtualization certification because they rolled out a new version of vSphere. Not only did VMware retire both VCP6.5-DCV and 2V0-621, but they changed all their certifications. VMware certs expire after two years and the name of the certification reflects what year it was earned in.

Is the VMware Certified Professional 6.5 – Data Center Virtualization (VCP6.5-DCV) still valid?

No, the VMware Certified Professional 6.5 – Data Center Virtualization (VCP6.5-DCV) is no longer a valid certification. VMware certifications are only valid for two years after they're earned, and the 2V0-621 was retired on August 30, 2019. If you already hold the VCP6.5-DCV and want to earn the VCP-DCV 2021, you'll need to pass at least two VMware courses to bring you up to speed on vSphere 7 before VMware will issue you a valid cert.

What test or certification replaced the VCP6.5-DCV?

The VMware Certified Professional 6.5 – Data Center Virtualization (VCP6.5-DCV) was retired on August 30, 2019, but its replacement is VCP-DCV 2021. The VCP6.5-DCV exam was 2V0-621 but after retiring it, it was replaced with VCP-DCV 2021's 2V0-21.20. Although there's another certification that followed the VCP6.5-DCV (V6.7), if you want a long-term vSphere certification that will be most up-to-date and easiest to maintain, you want to earn the VCP-DCV 2021.

Is this VMware Certified Professional 6.5 – Data Center Virtualization (VCP6.5-DCV) training still valuable?

Yes, training in vSphere 6.5 is still valuable, and this VCP6.5-DCV training is valuable. First of all, although there are substantial differences between vSphere versions 6.5 and 7, they're not wholly different pieces of technology -- this v6.5 training is valuable because it exposes the foundations of v7. Also, not all companies have migrated to the most recent version of vSphere and will need administrators who are familiar with the older version of the virtualization technology.
