For IT leaders

What IT leaders need to know before assigning this course

Technical skill rarely causes the escalation. The conversation around it usually does. When IT staff struggle with remote collaboration, angry customers, or conflict nobody addresses, tickets drag, teams fracture, and the service desk earns a reputation the rest of the business remembers.

Role fit: The course is built for new IT Practitioners with 0–3 years of experience, aspiring IT staff, and non-technical end users. Team Leads stepping into project leadership get a starting point on leadership styles, motivation, and engagement.

Time investment: About 7.6 hours across 11 standalone skills of 31–57 minutes each. Training Managers can schedule one module a week so staff are not pulled off the queue for long blocks.

Workplace conduct and risk: Respect in the Workplace covers the qualities of a respectful work environment and addresses sensitive topics around workplace behavior. The trainer states it is not a harassment-law course, so pair it with your HR policy training.

Change management: Modules such as Uncomfortable Conversations and Successful Presentations ask learners to apply the material to their own workplace scenarios. Results are strongest when Team Leads follow up in one-on-ones.

With CBT Nuggets, Training Managers can group modules into Playlists for onboarding cohorts. Team Reporting helps them confirm completion of assigned workplace-conduct and communication modules.

Team Impact

How this training helps your team succeed

IT teams rarely struggle because of technical gaps alone. Friction with co-workers, avoided conversations, and tense customer moments slow work down and drive escalations. This course uses practical scenarios to help your team handle the human side of IT work.

The instructor draws on real experience, including calming an angry trade-show visitor whose printer stopped working after a Windows Vista upgrade and presenting at Office 365 rollout demos. Learners also apply each module to their own work. Homework asks them to identify their default response to difficult conversations and revisit recent customer interactions.

  • Fewer escalations from frustrated users: Help desk and support staff learn a repeatable strategy for handling difficult customer interactions with empathy and professionalism.
  • Constructive conversations instead of avoidance: Team members learn techniques for keeping uncomfortable conversations respectful, including how to respond when someone else starts one unexpectedly or when a conversation doesn't go to plan.
  • Shared responsibility for a respectful workplace: Employees learn about the qualities of a respectful work environment, including diversity, inclusion, awareness, and how to help prevent harassment and discrimination. The course is not legal advice, but it reinforces that workplace respect is everyone’s responsibility.
  • Stronger remote and project teams: Staff build habits for planning their day and collaborating from home. Emerging Team Leads learn to adapt their leadership style, support performance, and improve engagement to help retain employees.

After completion

Knowledge

  • How to set up a productive home work environment, plan the workday, and use modern collaboration tools to work effectively with remote and headquarters-based colleagues

  • Their own default response style in uncomfortable conversations and conflict, whether that is withdrawing into silence or becoming confrontational

Frequently Asked Questions

What are soft skills and why are they called soft?

The term 'soft skills' is loosely defined, but it describes non-technical and interpersonal attributes that tend to relate to how well one works with others. The most common soft skills include communication, teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving, as well as the traits that comprise those skills. Soft skills are referred to as "soft" because they're hard to quantify or measure objectively. Soft skills require social finesse, emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

What makes soft skills valuable in business?

Soft skills are especially valuable in business or professional settings because the term 'soft skills' can refer to anything that improves interpersonal dynamics or enhances collaboration. Although many people like to imagine that the point of business is to get things done or be a robot of productivity, the reality is that improving relationships, boosting morale, fostering teamwork and adaptability is the key to long-term success, profitability and career outcomes.

How difficult is it to learn soft skills for business?

Some people find mastering soft skills very difficult – but don't make the mistake of assuming that you're either born with it or you're not. Soft skills can be learned, they can be practiced, and they can be perfected. And it has nothing to do with whether you're introverted or extroverted. Patience, self-awareness and a good course that walks you through the different approaches to practicing them makes learning soft skills easy.

Who should take this soft skills for business course?

If you interact with any other people at any point while you do your job, you should be planning on taking this soft skills course. It's clear to see why non-technical professionals like project managers, administrators and leaders should take a course on interacting better with others. But technical professionals who struggle to explain complicated topics or feel ignored or misunderstood can become much more effective in their interactions with this course.

What are the most valuable soft skills in business?

Obviously, many different soft skills apply to business, and it's hard to say which are most important. Interpersonal communication has to be high on the list, since bad communication is often the sole cause of professional failures and personal misunderstandings. If you work with many people, emotional intelligence is crucial to navigating the minefield that is other people's emotions. Adaptability is also crucial in a rapidly changing work environment.
