For IT leaders

What IT leaders need to know before assigning this course

Most Windows Server teams now run identity, networking, and storage across both on-premises data centers and Azure, but skills often lag the infrastructure. That gap shows up as risky identity sync decisions, Group Policy surprises, and network changes made without a plan.

Role fit: This intermediate course suits systems administrators, Windows Server administrators, and IT operations staff with 2–3 years of Windows Server experience. Team Leads can assign it to admins who own AD DS, Hyper-V, DNS/DHCP, file services, or Azure-connected workloads.

Time investment: Plan for about 39 hours across 37 skills. Spreading it over several weeks works well, with the identity, virtualization, networking, and storage blocks taken in order.

Risk and compliance: The course covers security trade-offs IT Directors care about:

  • Azure AD DS authenticating over LDAP rather than LDAPS
  • Policies that forbid syncing passwords over the public internet
  • Shielded VMs for highly regulated industries

Change-management notes: Instructors flag where production caution matters:

  • IPAM deployment is high-touch and affects critical networking and Group Policy
  • Group Policy preferences can behave unexpectedly
  • DFS in a single site needs testing before rollout

How CBT Nuggets supports the outcome: Virtual labs let admins practice domain controller installs and configuration safely. Unlimited practice tests help prepare your team for exam AZ-800 and the Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate certification.

Team Impact

How this training helps your team succeed

IT teams complete this training to run Windows Server confidently across on-premises data centers and Azure, without trial-and-error in production.

Real-world scenarios covered in the course:

  • Hybrid identity done right: Team members learn when Azure AD DS is the right fit (a cloud-hosted domain controller for Azure VMs and apps, not a way to push Group Policy to field laptops). They also learn to weigh security constraints such as unsecured LDAP traffic or policies that block password sync over the public internet before choosing Entra Connect or Cloud Sync.
  • Fewer self-inflicted outages: Instructors show where deployments go wrong. Examples include Group Policy Preferences that behave unexpectedly, DFS replication conflicts when shares sit in the same site or subnet, and IPAM rollouts that touch critical networking and GPO infrastructure. Your team plans and tests before changing production.
  • Faster remote troubleshooting: Practitioners use PowerShell Remoting, PowerShell Direct, SSH to non-Windows systems, and Azure Bastion to reach servers without exposing public IP addresses.
  • Resilient virtualization and storage: Teams learn when production checkpoints make sense and when to avoid checkpoints, how to use Hyper-V Replica and clustering, why shielded VMs suit highly regulated industries, and how to extend file services with Azure File Sync.

The result for IT Directors is a team that can design, deploy, and support hybrid infrastructure with fewer escalations and less reliance on outside help.

After completion

Capabilities your team walks away with

Knowledge

  • How Active Directory forests, domains, trusts, sites, and replication fit together, including when to deploy read-only domain controllers, FSMO roles, and domain controllers in Azure
  • How AD DS, Azure AD (Microsoft Entra ID), and Azure AD DS integrate, including the security trade-offs behind each option, such as unsecured LDAP and password-sync restrictions
  • How Group Policy and Group Policy Preferences process, where preferences behave unexpectedly, and how item-level targeting narrows scope
  • Hyper-V capabilities including checkpoints, Replica, clustering, shielded VMs for regulated industries, and Windows containers
  • Hybrid networking options: hybrid DNS, DHCP, IPAM, classic VPNs to Azure, Network Policy Server, and advanced options such as Azure Network Adapter and Azure Extended Network
  • Storage fundamentals across disks, volumes, file shares, BranchCache, DFS, and Azure File Sync

Ability

  • Install and configure domain controllers, create trust relationships, and manage users, groups, and computer joins
  • Configure Microsoft Entra Connect Sync and Cloud Sync to synchronize on-premises identities with the cloud
  • Troubleshoot Group Policy by isolating computer-side and user-side settings
  • Administer servers remotely with PowerShell remoting, PowerShell Direct, SSH, RDP, and Azure Bastion
  • Deploy and manage Azure VMs running Windows Server, and plan IPAM rollouts that touch critical DNS and DHCP infrastructure
  • Deploy Azure File Sync and DFS with proper site awareness, and script file share tasks with PowerShell

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does AZ-800 cost?

The AZ-800 exam costs $165 USD, which is the price for most of Microsoft’s associate-level certification exams. If you’re pursuing the Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate, you’ll need to pass two exams: AZ-800 and AZ-801, so the total cost is closer to $330. That price is only for the tests themselves, so you’ll want to take structured AZ-800 training like this to make sure you’re ready to pass on the first try. It’s also worth seeing if your employer will reimburse your certification exams and training, especially if the skills relate directly to your job.

What’s the best way to pass the AZ-800 exam?

The best way to pass the AZ-800 exam is to approach it like a practical systems administrator, not a memorization exercise. The exam focuses on real tasks: managing Active Directory, administering Windows Server workloads, handling hybrid networking, and working with Azure-integrated tools. An online course like this that gives you hands-on experience with Windows Server environments, especially things like identity management, virtualization, storage services, and hybrid connectivity is crucial. At the same time, don’t forget that it is still a multiple-choice test, so you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the exam blueprint and take a few practice exams to make sure you’re prepared.

What is the difference between AZ-800 and AZ-801?

AZ-800 and AZ-801 are the two exams you’ll need to pass if you want to earn the Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate certification, and they focus on different parts of the job. AZ-800 concentrates on core administrative tasks which is why this course focuses on managing Windows Server workloads, identity services, storage, networking, and virtualization in hybrid environments. It’s about operating and maintaining the infrastructure day to day. AZ-801 builds on that foundation by focusing more on advanced services and hybrid integration like migration strategies, disaster recovery, high availability, and security across on-premises and Azure environments. This AZ-800 course doesn’t cover AZ-801, but CBT Nuggets does offer an AZ-801 course as well.

What’s different about the AZ-800 exam after the update?

In January 2026, Microsoft updated AZ-800 by adding and removing specific skills and tool familiarity; this AZ-800 course is up to date with all changes. The exam now places more emphasis on modern hybrid administration, including service account management, SSH and RDP access, newer virtualization features like GPU partitioning, container support with WSL and AKS, and updated networking and storage capabilities like SMB over QUIC, iSCSI, and others. At the same time, several older or overly detailed configuration tasks were removed or consolidated, with newer tools like Azure Arc, Microsoft Defender, and Azure Update Manager replacing legacy integrations. In addition, many of Microsoft’s product and feature names have changed, and have been updated in this new material (e.g., Azure Active Directory is now Entra ID.)

What is the difference between Windows Server and Windows Server Core?

The main difference between Windows Server and Windows Server Core is the interface and how much of the operating system is installed. A standard Windows Server installation includes a full graphical interface (GUI) and desktop-style management tools. Windows Server Core is a minimal installation option that removes the GUI and is managed mostly through command-line or remote administration tools. Because it includes fewer components, Server Core uses less disk space, requires fewer updates, and has a smaller attack surface. That makes it a common choice for production environments where stability and security matter, though it tends to raise the minimum required skill for administrators working on it, which is where a course like this one comes in. If you use administrative tools such as Windows Admin Center as included in this course, you can remotely manage Server Core servers in largely the same way as if it were a full desktop server installation.
