Microsoft Copilot for M365 End Users

Rolling out Microsoft 365 Copilot is easy. Getting consistent, responsible use across departments is harder. When employees guess at prompts, skip source checks, or don't understand licensing limits, the result is uneven output, rework, and unclear expectations around AI and work data.

This beginner course gives business users, admins, and the IT practitioners supporting a rollout a shared, practical approach to Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. Learners practice a repeatable prompt framework (context, goal, source, and expectations), draft and refine documents and presentations for a specific audience, summarize and locate information in Outlook and Teams, and get started with Copilot agents. They also learn why generative AI responses vary and why outputs need review.

At 7.8 hours across 10 skills, the course supports phased enablement, roughly one app or workflow per session. Guided challenges, such as building a team responsible-use sheet, and quiz-style checks reinforce each skill. Training Managers can assign it through CBT Nuggets Playlists and use Team Reporting to track completion as Copilot reaches each department.

For IT leaders

What IT leaders need to know before assigning this course

For IT leaders: Rolling out Copilot licenses doesn't mean employees will use them well. Without training, staff may accept AI output without review, write vague prompts, or leave the tool unused. This course gives end users a shared, responsible way to work with Copilot across Microsoft 365.

  • Risk and governance: The opening skill covers using AI responsibly. It shows a real fabrication (hallucination) example and has learners draft a one-page responsible-AI guide. Organizations without formal AI guidelines can use that guide as a starting point.
  • Role fit: This is a beginner course for business, admin, and office staff who already work in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams and have a Copilot-enabled license. IT Practitioners supporting a rollout get a practical view of where Copilot appears in Microsoft 365 and why the Microsoft 365 Copilot app should be the starting point for work-related AI requests.
  • Time investment: About 7.8 hours across 10 skills of roughly 45–50 minutes each. Team Leads can assign skills by app, so a finance team can start with Excel and an executive assistant with Outlook.
  • Change management: The instructor repeatedly has learners test Copilot on their own familiar files, inboxes, and spreadsheets. That way each person can judge whether the output is accurate and useful, which builds realistic trust in the tool.

Each skill ends with a hands-on challenge and quiz review, so Training Managers can confirm learners practiced the skills rather than just watching.

Team Impact

How this training helps your team succeed

Copilot licenses only pay off when people know how to use them well. This training turns a Copilot rollout into everyday team capability, grounded in realistic workplace scenarios from a fictitious organization, Green Beans Organic Wines.

Teams practice the work they already do: drafting a printable workshop handout in Word, building a presentation from scratch when a manager drops by with a last-minute request, summarizing a detailed slide deck before a meeting, and using Copilot in Excel to help review and clean up inconsistent spreadsheet data. They also learn to pull action items out of a busy Outlook inbox, use Copilot during Teams calls, and collaborate on shared Copilot Pages.

  • Better results with fewer retries: Learners use a four-part prompt framework of context, goal, source, and expectations, so Copilot output is closer to usable on the first try.
  • Lower risk from AI errors: The course shows a real example of fabrication (hallucination) and stresses checking output against data learners know well before they send or share it.
  • Responsible-use guidelines to build on: Teams create a one-page cheat sheet on using AI responsibly. Organizations without AI guidelines can use it as a starting point.
  • A path to repeatable workflows: Learners explore where agent-based workflows fit, including when a scenario calls for Copilot Studio, such as when it needs business logic or role-based access controls.

The result is consistent, confident Copilot use across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, instead of uneven adoption across the team.

After completion

Capabilities your team walks away with

Knowledge

  • How Microsoft 365 Copilot works across the Copilot app, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, and where each fits in daily work
  • Responsible AI practices, including how to spot fabrication (hallucination) and why every output needs human review before it is shared
  • The four-part prompt framework of context, goal, source, and expectations, plus how custom instructions shape every chat
  • How Copilot supports Excel work and why well-structured tables with meaningful column headings improve results
  • What Copilot agents are, how they differ from standard chat, and when an agent can help answer repeat questions for a team

Ability

  • Write specific, structured prompts that return usable drafts, summaries, and plans on the first attempt
  • Draft and refine Word documents, ask questions about document content, and correct formatting that Copilot adds
  • Clean up Excel data and review Copilot’s suggestions before approving changes, then generate formulas, insights, and visualizations
  • Build a PowerPoint deck from scratch, rework individual slides from a source file, and summarize long decks to prepare for meetings
  • Find the emails in Outlook that need action, recap Teams calls with action items, and share collaborative content with colleagues through Copilot Pages
  • Use a prebuilt agent and create a simple custom agent that answers team questions, such as product details

Readiness check

Confirm prerequisite knowledge before training begins

A short placement assessment on the CBT Nuggets assessments platform measures whether a learner already has the foundation this course assumes. IT leaders use it to put the right people in the right training — and any learner can take it right now to make sure they'll get full value from day one.

  • Questions generated from this course's own video transcripts — what gets measured is exactly what gets taught
  • Instant, per-learner results that show whether the prerequisite foundation is in place
  • Results roll up into team readiness reporting, so training hours go where they change outcomes

Frequently Asked Questions

Who on my team should take this Copilot course?

It is designed for business users, administrative staff, and IT practitioners supporting a Copilot rollout who already use Microsoft 365 apps day to day. It assumes no prior Copilot experience.

How long does the course take per learner?

The course runs 7.8 hours across 10 skills, with most skills under an hour. Many teams schedule it in phases, covering roughly one app or workflow per session.

Does this course map to a Microsoft certification exam?

No, this is a practical end-user productivity course rather than exam preparation. Teams pursuing certification can look at the separate Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional (AB-730) course in the catalog.

How does it support responsible AI use during a Copilot rollout?

Learners see why generative AI responses vary and need review, how to direct Copilot to the right sources, and how licensing affects work-data access. One guided challenge has learners create a responsible-use sheet that can serve as a starting point for team guidelines.

What hands-on practice is included, and can I track progress?

Skills include guided challenges, such as drafting an email requesting a Copilot license and building a PowerPoint for a defined audience, plus quiz-style checks. Team Leads can assign the course through Playlists and monitor completion with Team Reporting.
