For IT leaders
What IT leaders need to know before assigning this course
Many SOC and IT operations teams already have Splunk, but only a few people know how to search it well. When those few people are busy, investigations slow down, dashboards go stale, and alerts get missed. This Beginner course gives the whole team a shared Splunk foundation and prepares them for the Splunk Core Certified User exam.
Role fit: Security analysts, SOC staff, and IT practitioners who need to work in Splunk quickly. It also suits newer team members moving into security or data roles. No prior Splunk experience is assumed.
Time investment: About 9.3 hours across 11 skills. Most teams can finish in two to three weeks at a few hours per week. The first skill, Welcome to Splunk, is available to preview, so Team Leads can review it before assigning the course.
Security operations and risk: The course presents searching as part of SOC and security decision-making. It covers SPL fundamentals, including commands such as table, rename, fields, dedup, and sort. These are the skills teams need to start answering operational questions from aggregated Splunk data, such as which accounts had successful logons and which source IPs were allowed traffic.
Change management: The course uses default Splunk settings and a shared, isolated lab dataset, so everyone works from the same starting point. The lab setup also identifies the external dataset used in the course for teams that want to compare practice work against a consistent source.
How CBT Nuggets supports the outcome: Virtual Labs let learners practice SPL searches without touching production systems. Playlists help Training Managers set the order of assigned skills, and Team Reporting shows IT Directors who has made progress toward certification.
