CompTIA CloudNetX (CNX-001)

Hybrid and multi-cloud growth puts network teams in a difficult spot. When connectivity, routing, failover, and access controls are designed in isolation, cloud network changes can cause outages and security gaps. This CompTIA CloudNetX (CNX-001) course gives IT Directors a way to build one shared design and troubleshooting standard across network and cloud engineers.

Across 39 skills, learners cover VPC/VNet architecture, subnetting and hybrid IP addressing, hybrid and multi-cloud connectivity, transit and hub-and-spoke topologies, and load balancing. They also study DNS, DR networking, segmentation, encrypted connectivity, cloud firewalls, and Zero Trust networking. The course stresses documenting baselines and proving that traffic actually flows, not just that a tunnel shows "up." Its implementation work includes an AWS site-to-site VPN with a customer-managed gateway.

The course closes with operations. Learners practice traffic logging, health monitoring, and structured troubleshooting of routing symmetry, addressing, application access, and security misconfigurations. They also cover performance optimization and automation drift.

At about 34 hours per learner, the course fits a CNX-001 certification push or a standardization effort ahead of a migration or architecture change. Training Managers can use CBT Nuggets Playlists to assign the right sequence and Team Reporting to track completion across the team.

For IT leaders

What IT leaders need to know before assigning this course

Hybrid and multi-cloud networks often grow faster than the team's design discipline. The result is overlapping IP ranges, over-permissioned security groups, undocumented VPN tunnels, and configuration drift that surfaces as outages or audit findings. CompTIA CloudNetX (CNX-001) gives network teams a vendor-neutral way to plan, secure, and troubleshoot these environments.

Role fit: This course is advanced. It suits experienced network engineers and Team Leads who are moving into hybrid cloud architecture. It is not a starting point for help desk staff. IT Directors can assign it to the practitioners who own connectivity, segmentation, and firewall policy.

Time investment: Plan for about 34 hours across 39 skills, or roughly 4–6 weeks at a few hours per week. Skills follow a design → secure → troubleshoot → automate sequence, so teams can stage the work by phase.

Risk and compliance: The course covers compliance segmentation for regulated workloads, identity and access design across cloud boundaries, and traffic visibility for policy validation. These are the kinds of controls teams need to explain clearly during audits.

Change management: The course reinforces disciplined habits: map flows before writing rules, change one thing at a time, document every step, and remove drift rather than leave one-off fixes in place.

How CBT Nuggets supports the outcome: Hands-on labs move learners from theory to working configurations. Learners capture traffic through a pfSense firewall and work through AWS site-to-site VPN configuration.

Team Impact

How this training helps your team succeed

IT teams complete this training to stop treating cloud networking as trial and error. The course moves from design into hands-on labs: capturing real workload traffic through a pfSense firewall, building a site-to-site VPN between an on-prem environment and a cloud network, and deploying an AWS network firewall with its own subnet, routing, and firewall policy. Because CloudNetX is vendor neutral, the methods carry over to whichever cloud platforms your organization runs.

  • Fewer outages from hybrid connectivity changes: Network engineers learn to confirm matching IKE and IPsec settings, peer identity, protected networks, and routing choices before a tunnel goes live. They also evaluate when a design needs dynamic route exchange, route control, and centralized routing so it can scale cleanly and fail over predictably as more networks are added.
  • Faster, more disciplined troubleshooting: Teams trace routing decisions hop by hop and compare the expected path with the observed one. They change one thing at a time, document each step, and keep a clear way to roll back. For DNS issues, they check the cache before assuming a record is wrong.
  • Segmentation you can defend during an audit: Practitioners map real application flows before writing security group and ACL rules. They separate production traffic from management paths, remove inherited over-permissive rules, and keep exceptions for regulated workloads time-bound and documented.
  • Less operational drift: Teams treat monitoring as an ongoing cycle of observation and improvement. They use known baselines for latency, loss, and throughput to spot unexpected variation before one-off fixes spread across environments.

The result for IT Directors is a network team that designs to recovery objectives such as RTO and logs traffic to confirm that policy works as intended. That team can also explain its design decisions to auditors and stakeholders.

After completion

Capabilities your team walks away with

Knowledge

  • How workload communication patterns, traffic types, and multi-tier application flows shape trust zones, routing paths, and segmentation before a topology is chosen
  • How to build scalable, non-overlapping IP addressing and subnet plans for hybrid and multi-cloud environments
  • How hub-and-spoke and transit designs centralize routing, inspection, and shared services, and why route behavior has security consequences
  • How recovery objectives such as RTO drive failover speed, pre-provisioned connectivity, and automation in DR network design
  • How subnet design, route tables, firewall rules, and cloud-side security controls support compliance segmentation for regulated workloads
  • What an intended network state is and how drift from approved templates creates operational and security risk

Ability

  • Capture and analyze real workload traffic to separate required communication from unnecessary or risky paths
  • Plan, implement, and review site-to-site VPNs, including matching IKE and IPsec settings, authentication, protected networks, and static or BGP routing
  • Define remote access requirements covering users, identity, client devices, routing, DNS, and validation
  • Deploy a cloud firewall with a firewall policy, adjust subnet route tables, and apply ingress, egress, and east-west inspection
  • Apply Zero Trust principles by defining allowed traffic flows, naming control points, and using logging and evidence review to validate policy behavior
  • Troubleshoot DNS, routing symmetry, addressing, and application access by comparing expected and observed paths, changing one thing at a time, documenting each step, and fixing drift instead of leaving it in place

Frequently Asked Questions

Who on my team should take the CompTIA CloudNetX (CNX-001) course?

The course is aimed at network engineers, cloud engineers, and Team Leads responsible for designing, securing, or supporting connectivity between on-premises environments and cloud VPCs or VNets. It works best for practitioners who already handle traditional networking and need a shared cloud network design language.

What prerequisites should learners have before starting?

This is an intermediate course mapped to an advanced professional-level certification, so learners should already be comfortable with routing, IP addressing, firewalls, and VPN fundamentals. The course builds on that foundation with cloud-specific design, security, and troubleshooting concepts that apply across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.

How long does the course take per learner?

The course runs about 34 hours across 39 skills, with most skills taking roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Training Managers can use CBT Nuggets Playlists to sequence the skills and Team Reporting to track completion across the team.

Which certification does this course prepare my team for?

The course is aligned to the CompTIA CloudNetX certification exam, CNX-001. It covers cloud network design, hybrid and multi-cloud connectivity, high availability and DR, security and Zero Trust networking, and operations topics such as monitoring, troubleshooting, and automation drift.

Does the course include hands-on implementation work?

Yes. Learners walk through an AWS site-to-site VPN built with a customer-managed gateway, focusing on proving that routes, firewall policy, and test systems actually communicate. A dedicated skill also covers implementing the AWS Cloud Firewall.
