AWS Governance at Scale

As AWS footprints grow, inconsistent account structures, identity patterns, tagging, and deployment practices create security gaps, cost surprises, and audit friction. AWS Governance at Scale gives IT Directors a structured way to move cloud, security, and platform teams from ad hoc administration to repeatable governance across a multi-account AWS environment.

The course is built for practitioners who already support AWS operations. It follows a deliberate sequence: multi-account organization, guardrails, centralized identity, tagging and classification, and automated account provisioning, then non-compliance detection, automated remediation, threat finding, public edge defense, egress control, fleet management, governed infrastructure distribution, and cost and compliance posture. A final module covers open source governance tools that complement native AWS tooling.

This is not a certification course. It is an operating-model course for teams preparing for audits, standardizing runbooks, or scaling account growth without losing control. Training Managers can assign the 14 modules, about 12.6 hours in total, as a Playlist and track progress with Team Reporting. Team Leads can use the sequence to align change-management expectations across teams.

  • Define guardrails and centralize identity for authentication and authorization across accounts
  • Design tagging and classification standards for ownership, compliance, and cost visibility
  • Automate account provisioning so new AWS accounts start out governed
  • Detect non-compliant resources and automate their remediation
  • Identify threats and control exposure at the public edge and through outbound egress
  • Evaluate open source governance tools that fill gaps in native AWS tooling

For IT leaders

What IT leaders need to know before assigning this course

For IT leaders: As AWS accounts multiply, inconsistent structures, tagging, and identity patterns lead to security gaps, surprise bills, and painful audits. Accounts spun up outside IT for a quick proof of concept can end up running real business workloads. This course gives cloud engineers, AWS administrators, security engineers, and platform teams a shared operating model for governing a multi-account environment.

Compliance and risk: This is not a SOC 2, PCI DSS, or certification course. It covers the AWS tools and strategies that prepare your environment to align with those programs: OU design, guardrails, centralized identity, tag standards, configuration-based detection and remediation, threat findings, standardized security group rules, and budget alerts.

Role fit and time: Built for intermediate practitioners who already support AWS operations. Plan about 12.6 hours per learner across 14 skills. A one-skill-per-week rollout fits alongside normal workloads.

Change management: The course treats governance as making the governed path the easiest path, not as more approvals. Accounts arrive with baselines, controls, tags, and access already in place. Team Leads can use the sequence to set shared expectations across security, platform, and workload teams.

Training Managers can assign all 14 skills as a Playlist and track progress with Team Reporting.

Team Impact

How this training helps your team succeed

IT teams use this training to replace ad hoc AWS administration with governance that works during daily operations, not only during audit season. The course follows a realistic scenario — a growing startup's AWS environment — from an empty AWS Organizations structure to a governed multi-account setup with guardrails, centralized identity, tagging standards, and automated detection.

One scenario will sound familiar to IT Directors. An engineer skips the ticket queue, creates an account in about five minutes, and leadership presses that proof of concept into production. The course answers this with Control Tower Account Factory, which makes the governed path the fastest path. New accounts arrive with baselines, controls, tags, and access already in place.

  • Fewer shadow accounts and less audit friction: Your team builds security, infrastructure, workload, sandbox, and suspended OUs so security findings roll up to a single Security Hub view across the organization.
  • Faster response to misconfigurations: Engineers use AWS Config-centered governance patterns to detect resources that fall out of compliance and connect those findings to operational workflows.
  • Earlier threat detection: The team learns to read GuardDuty findings and attack sequences, such as compromised IAM credentials. They also test WAF web ACLs against injection, script, and path traversal attempts so they can confirm attacks are blocked and normal traffic still gets through.
  • Fewer cost surprises and cleaner operational control: Your team sets up budget alerts and consistent tagging, then applies governed account and infrastructure patterns that reduce one-off administration across the AWS environment.

Capabilities your team walks away with

Knowledge

  • How a multi-account AWS Organizations structure (security, infrastructure, workload, sandbox, and suspended OUs) gives a single view of security issues and shared services
  • What the shared responsibility model leaves to your team, including encryption and customer data
  • Why tagging taxonomies need standardized, enforced values, because mismatched case breaks policy matching
  • The difference between configuration compliance and threat detection, and why a correctly configured server can still be compromised
  • How Config rule evaluation modes (detective vs. proactive) work, and when a secondary control is needed
  • Where open source governance tools complement native AWS tooling

Ability

  • Turn on CloudTrail and budget alerts so the team catches runaway spend early
  • Provision accounts with Control Tower Account Factory so new accounts arrive with baselines, controls, tags, and access already set
  • Validate role permissions with the IAM Policy Simulator and use CLI access through SSO
  • Configure Config remediation with Systems Manager automation, with SNS notifications to developers
  • Publish governed infrastructure through Service Catalog and StackSets so teams can deploy approved resources consistently across accounts and OUs
  • Share approved resources across accounts with Resource Access Manager and standardize deployment patterns for multi-account governance

Readiness check

Confirm prerequisite knowledge before training begins

A short placement assessment on the CBT Nuggets assessments platform measures whether a learner already has the foundation this course assumes. IT leaders use it to put the right people in the right training — and any learner can take it right now to make sure they'll get full value from day one.

  • Questions generated from this course's own video transcripts — what gets measured is exactly what gets taught
  • Instant, per-learner results that show whether the prerequisite foundation is in place
  • Results roll up into team readiness reporting, so training hours go where they change outcomes

Frequently Asked Questions

Who on my team should take AWS Governance at Scale?

It is intended for cloud engineers, AWS administrators, security engineers, and platform team members who already support AWS operations. Team Leads can also use it to align runbooks and change-management expectations across groups.

What experience should learners have before starting?

The course is rated intermediate and assumes working familiarity with AWS operations. It does not teach AWS fundamentals. It builds governance practices on top of existing AWS administration skills.

How long does the course take per learner?

The course has 14 modules totaling about 12.6 hours of recorded training. The first eight modules, which cover organization structure through threat finding, run about 7 hours.

Does this course map to an AWS certification exam?

No. This is not a certification course. It focuses on real-world governance practices and includes open source tools beyond native AWS services. Teams pursuing certification can pair it with related CBT Nuggets AWS certification courses.

How does this training support audit readiness and team rollout?

Modules on tagging and classification, non-compliance detection, remediation, and cost and compliance posture give teams a consistent operating model for evidence and accountability. Training Managers can assign the sequence as a Playlist and track completion through Team Reporting.
