What is the Difference Between Data Security and Data Privacy?
The focus of data security is protecting sensitive data from unauthorized and malicious access through various techniques, and preventing it from being exploited. You can achieve data security through means such as activity monitoring, network security, access control, encryption, authentication, and breach response.
The focus of data privacy, on the other hand, is on the proper handling, processing and usage of personal information. As opposed to protecting an organization's sensitive data, you are protecting the sensitive information of individuals that your organization stores during the course of its operations. You can achieve data privacy through managing contracts and policies, by applying laws and regulations such as GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), and by using third-party management.
While data security and data privacy do mean different things, you cannot have data privacy without first having data security. Only once you have secured your data can you maintain the privacy of it.
