What is the Cloud?
The term "the cloud" refers to remote Internet servers that provide services such as applications and datastores. These servers reside in data centers across the world, and you can use their resources without having to purchase and maintain your own computer hardware. You also don't have to maintain your data. By using the cloud, you also can often access applications and data from any computing device with Internet access, such as a computer, tablet or phone while receiving a similar user experience.
The key technology behind the cloud is virtualization. It allows a single server to share its resources, such as storage, memory and CPU, with multiple virtual machines. These machines are segregated from each other to the extent that they are as effectively secure as physical machines. Cloud vendors also often employ redundancy, so if a virtual machine should fail (or the server it resides on), you can still access your applications and data.
