Roadmap to Success is a series of posts designed to help learners better understand certification pathways, career opportunities associated with those certifications, and the next steps beyond certification.

The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITILⓇ) has emerged as a standard method and approach to IT that is increasingly in demand among employers. ITILⓇ is a framework of best practices for improving IT services. The ITILⓇ Foundations certification generally offers a general awareness of key elements, concepts, and terminology used in the ITILⓇ service lifecycle.

ITILⓇ Qualification Levels

There are five levels of ITILⓇ certifications (or qualifications, as Axelos terms them). Each level of qualification provides eligibility for subsequent levels:

Each exam serves as a prerequisite for the next level. For example, a learner must earn the Foundation Level qualification before being eligible for the Practitioner Level qualification exam, and so on.

ITILⓇ Foundation Level

The ITILⓇ Foundation Level qualification is intended to give learners a general awareness of the ITILⓇ service lifecycle, including the links between lifecycle stages, the processes used, and their contribution to service management practices.

Learners pursuing this certification path should be familiar with ITILⓇ and work for an organization that has adopted its standards. The ITILⓇ Foundation Level is an entry-level qualification, so learners new to the industry can start here to build a strong understanding of globally recognized best practices associated with IT service lifecycles. There is no prerequisite for the ITILⓇ Foundation Level qualification.

The Next Step

The ITILⓇ Foundation Level qualification is a building block for developing service lifecycle best practices expertise. ITILⓇ provides learners with several levels to continue to advance during their training. Learners can progress through the Practitioner, Intermediate, Expert, and Master Level qualifications.

The Practitioner Level qualification is new to the ITILⓇ qualification pathway. This new pathway will be available worldwide by the end of 2015. This qualification emphasizes the practical application of the ITILⓇ framework.

It provides valuable guidance on leveraging the Continual Service Improvement (CSI) to help organizations optimize the adoption and adaptation of ITILⓇ. In addition, the Practitioner Level qualification works to equip learners to leverage other IT frameworks, practices, and methodologies, including Lean, DevOps, Agile, and SIAM.

Many learners pursuing ITILⓇ qualifications seek to diversify their training. Since ITILⓇ is a framework of best practices, many learners find project management training an excellent supplement to their development and resumes. Here's our project management training:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) for the PMBOK Guide Fifth Edition

  • Project Management for the Real World

  • CAPM Certification Training Course

  • Agile for the Real World

  • Being Agile with JIRA

  • PRINCE2® Foundations

Learners who can effectively apply the ITILⓇ framework to projects they can productively manage can be leaders in the IT industry.

Recertification

ITILⓇ qualifications are not subject to recertification.
