The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification is a foundational certification designed to distinguish project management professionals at the outset of their careers.

The CAPM is also the first step toward earning other Project Management Institute certifications. It allows project management professionals to set themselves apart and gain an edge in the competitive IT project management field.

But is it the right choice for you? Here is what you need to know if you're considering the CAPM certification.

What is the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)?

The Project Management Institute's (PMI®) Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is a globally recognized certification for new project managers. The CAPM bridges all industries, but can be of particular use in the IT industry.

The CAPM is designed to verify your fundamental understanding of terminology and processes of effective project management. CAPM is also associated with PMI's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)®, a guide that specifically addresses the standard terminology and guidelines for project management.

Common job titles for those holding a CAPM certification include:

  • Project Coordinator

  • Associate Project Manager

  • Infrastructure Project Manager

  • Project Manager

  • IT Project Manager

To take the exam, you'll need to apply on the PMI site. The application requires learners to meet minimum education qualifications in order to be eligible:

  • A secondary degree (high school diploma, associate's degree, or the global equivalent)

  • 23 hours of project management education completed by the date of the exam.

You can earn project management education (to qualify for the exam) provided by a PMI Registered Education Provider (REP). CBT Nuggets is a PMI partner, offering a variety of courses that are pre-approved for PMI educational credits.

What to Expect on the CAPM Exam

The CAPM exam is a multiple-choice test designed to assess your understanding of core project management concepts and terminology. You’ll have three hours (that’s 180 minutes) to answer 150 questions. While PMI doesn’t reveal the exact passing score, expect a challenge—this isn’t an exam you’ll want to wing.

You’ll need to register through PMI’s website, which requires setting up an account. The good news is that online proctoring is available, so you can take the test from home if that’s more convenient.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the essentials:

  • Time: 180 minutes

  • Format: 150 multiple-choice questions

  • Cost: $225 for PMI members ($129/yr + $10 application); $300 for non-members

  • Registration: Requires a PMI account

  • Recertification Requirement: Earn 15 continuing education credits every 3 years. (You are no longer required to retake the exam!)

If you're prepping for the exam, make sure to review the CAPM Exam Content Outline and the CAPM Handbook, both available for free on PMI’s site.

How Much Can You Earn With a CAPM?

According to ZipRecruiter, a project manager can earn an average of $92,000 depending on professional experience. Industry, location, and years of experience can impact this rate. Payscale.com reports a range of salaries for employees holding the CAPM® certification between $45,000 and $117,000 annually.

The Next Step After the CAPM

Many learners who pursue their CAPM certification tend to have an interest in project management-related training and certifications and are looking to grow their careers. As a result, many learners pursue the following certifications as options after passing the CAPM:

  • PMP: Made up of one exam, the Project Management Professional (PMP)

  • PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP): Made up of one exam the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP).

  • ITIL® Foundation: Made up of one exam, the ITIL Foundation.

Project Management Institute Certifications

PMI® offers a bunch of project management certifications, but there’s no official order you have to follow. You don’t need to earn one cert before going after another. If you meet the requirements, you’re good to go.

That said, each certification comes with its own set of education and experience requirements, so you’ll want to make sure you’ve got the right background before applying.

Is the CAPM Worth It?

There's no right or wrong answer. Whether the CAPM is worth it depends on you. The CAPM is a solid entry-level certification, especially if you’re new to project management and want to prove you know the fundamentals. It’s a great fit for:

  • Career changers who are trying to break into project management.

  • Students or recent grads looking to stand out.

  • Team members who support projects and want to level up.

But before you dive in, ask yourself:

  • Do you have the time to prep for and pass a 150-question exam?

  • Are you looking for a long-term career in project management, or just exploring your options?

  • Will your employer recognize or reward the certification?

If the answer to at least two of those is yes, then the CAPM could be a smart move. It’s a strong first step—and a confidence booster—if you're eyeing the PMP down the road.

Final Thoughts

Skilled project managers are in high demand, and that’s not changing anytime soon. That’s why certifications like the CAPM can give you a real edge with employers. But don’t stop there! The CAPM is just the starting line. A career in project management can lead to all kinds of opportunities for growth, learning, and seriously rewarding work.
