SAFe Scrum Master training FAQs

Which is better: Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) or Agile?

Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) vs Agile isn’t really an either/or. Agile is a set of values and principles. SAFe is a specific system for applying those principles in a large organization with lots of teams and dependencies. If you’re a small team shipping software independently, “plain” Agile is often better where SAFe might be unnecessary. But in enterprises with hundreds or thousands of people working across portfolios, SAFe tries to solve the coordination problems that Agile doesn’t address on its own. SAFe trades flexibility for alignment and predictability. Whether it’s “better” depends on scale, culture, and constraints.

What job roles will this cert prepare me for?

The SAFe Scrum Master cert prepares you for roles in enterprise Agile leadership, especially in large SaaS or complex product organizations. Specific job titles this course can help you prepare for include Scrum Master, Team Coach, Release Train Engineer support, and Agile Program Manager. While some companies are reducing standalone Scrum Master roles, what's really declining are lightweight, meeting-focused positions. Organizations still need professionals who can coach teams, support ART events, work across departments, and think at the system level. Move into enterprise-scale facilitation, metrics, and cross-team alignment and find job roles in larger companies where SAFe is embedded in how work gets done with this SAFe Scrum Master training.

Is the SAFe Scrum Master worth it?

The SAFe Scrum Master certification can be worth it, but it’s situational. SAFe Scrum Master is an expensive and fairly niche cert. If your organization already uses SAFe or plans to adopt it, the cert has real value: shared language matters. But if you work somewhere using Scrum, Kanban, or Lean without SAFe, it may not translate well. Your best-case scenario is to get your employer to cover the exam fee. But the real value isn’t the badge itself — it’s learning how Scrum changes when you operate inside an Agile Release Train with real dependencies.

How much does the SAFe Scrum Master certification cost?

The SAFe Scrum Master certification exam costs $495. Each retake will cost an additional $495, which means going in unprepared can get expensive fast. This Scrum Master course doesn't just prepare you for the official proctored exam, but also helps you build real-world Scrum skills you'll use in enterprise environments. With this course, you'll be prepared for the role of scrum master, and save money by passing the SAFe Scrum Master exam on your first attempt.

How do I renew the SAFe Scrum Master certification?

SAFe Scrum Master renewal is ongoing, not one-and-done. You’ll need 12 continuing education units (CEUs) per year, totaling 24 CEUs over two years. You can earn 1 CEU for every hour of relevant professional development or learning activity, which can include official training, webinars or virtual workshops, conference attendance, reading SAFe Framework Articles, authoring articles or blog posts, SAFe Connect Community Engagement, and coaching and volunteering. After you’ve completed the CEUs, you’ll pay a $195 renewal fee to keep the certification active. SAFe expects practitioners to stay actively engaged, not just certified.

Who is SAFe Scrum Master training for?

This course is for Scrum Masters, project managers, and leaders working in large organizations that use SAFe. It’s also a strong fit for managers and executives who want to improve Agile adoption in their organization.

What our learners say

  • CBT Nuggets is exactly what I needed.

    Thomas S. | Systems Engineer & Consultant
  • Having access to on-demand labs that I could spin up instantly was very helpful. I didn’t have to have a home environment with a bunch of virtual machines spun up. Or worry about destroying things.

    Brian V. | Monitoring Engineer
  • Since we’ve implemented our official career progression plan, we’ve probably had 40 certifications passed across the team [within a year]. A lot of that is due to our team being able to utilize CBT Nuggets as a training resource.
