For IT leaders
What IT leaders need to know before assigning this course
Many IT and data teams still depend on a few people who can pull answers from a relational database. Everyone else waits on them or exports data to spreadsheets. That creates reporting bottlenecks and inconsistent numbers across the organization. SQL for Data Practitioners gives your team a shared, standardized SQL foundation so more people can query, filter, and aggregate data from relational databases.
Role fit: This beginner-level course suits IT Practitioners and data practitioners with about a year of relational database exposure. It also suits analysts moving from spreadsheets to databases. Team Leads can use it to onboard new hires, and experienced practitioners can use it to validate their SQL skills.
Time investment: Plan on roughly 8.6 hours per learner across 10 skills. The course moves from setup, PostgreSQL, pgAdmin, spreadsheets, tables, and databases to SELECT statements, DISTINCT, COUNT(), and then creating and manipulating databases and tables with SQL syntax. Most learners can finish it in two to three weeks alongside their regular work.
Change-management notes:
- Learners install PostgreSQL and pgAdmin locally and pull course files from GitHub. Confirm that your workstation policies allow these installs before assigning the course.
- The instructor uses spreadsheets to explain tables and databases, which helps staff who come from Excel-based reporting.
- Later modules cover creating and manipulating databases and tables. Set expectations that learners practice in sandbox databases, not production data.
How CBT Nuggets supports the outcome: Hands-on code challenges with walkthrough solution videos reinforce concepts before learners move on.
