Public vs Private Cloud: What’s the Better Choice?
When users think of the cloud, they oftentimes aren't thinking of the variations within cloud architectures or the unique offerings certain cloud providers offer that others may not. One of the primary distinctions in cloud-computing is private versus public cloud.
Private, also known as enterprise cloud, is a cloud architecture where the cloud resources reside physically within an organization's network. A good way to think of this is an enterprise organization owning its own internal cloud infrastructure. Here they gain all the scaling and high availability characteristics of the cloud, just owned and managed internally.
Public cloud is the cloud architecture that we often assume when we say cloud. Major vendors offer cloud resources to be consumed on an as-needed basis to organizations looking to reduce their on-premises footprint. Typically, we find smaller organizations consuming resources from public cloud vendors as it reduces the capital expenditure required for standing up a cloud environment, while enterprise organizations may lean towards the private cloud model as they can build strict security protocols to limit access to their network and cloud resources.
