Claude Certified Architect – Foundations (CCAR-F)

AI-assisted development raises a governance question for IT leaders: how do you capture the productivity of Claude Code and the Claude API without letting one-off prompts become unreviewable production risk? This intermediate course gives development teams a shared, repeatable approach to building with Claude.

Built for software engineers, backend developers, and system architects who already work with APIs, the course moves from Claude Code setup and context control through API foundations, prompt evaluation, tool use, RAG and vector search, and MCP servers. It closes with agent workflows and a capstone agentic multimedia article system. Along the way, teams practice planning modes, success criteria, custom commands, hooks that block sensitive information, test datasets and graders, and human approval steps that keep AI-generated changes scoped and auditable.

For Team Leads, the result is consistent practice: common tasks such as dependency audits, test writing, and pull request summaries become repeatable commands instead of ad hoc prompts, and defects surface during evaluation rather than after release.

With 40 skills across 32.4 hours, Training Managers can assign the course in sections over several weeks, use CBT Nuggets Playlists to sequence skills by role or project phase, and rely on Team Reporting so IT Directors can track progress across assigned learners.

For IT leaders

What IT leaders need to know before assigning this course

Many IT teams are already experimenting with Claude, but ad hoc prompting and copy-paste AI code create real risk: unreviewed automation, leaked secrets, and applications that have never been tested beyond a single good output. This course gives your team a structured path from Claude Code basics to production-ready agentic system design. It also prepares learners for the Claude Certified Architect – Foundations exam.

Role fit: Best suited to backend developers, software engineers, and system architects who already work with APIs. Learners work in Colab and Claude Code project environments, so coding comfort is expected. Team Leads standardizing AI-assisted development will benefit from the sections on custom commands, planning mode, and CLAUDE.md project memory.

Risk and governance: Several skills focus directly on safer automation:

  • Hooks that add guardrails around tool use and automation
  • Risk levels and approval flows for built-in tools
  • Human review points for risky actions
  • Testing prompts against datasets before and after changes

The instructor repeatedly stresses one rule: "outsource your thinking, never your understanding." That is a useful cultural message for any team adopting AI tools.

Time investment: About 32 hours across 40 skills, each roughly 45–60 minutes. Every skill ends with a hands-on challenge, and the course closes with a two-part capstone. Plan for steady weekly progress rather than a single sprint.

How CBT Nuggets supports the outcome: Assign the course as a Playlist to sequence it alongside other development priorities. Use Team Reporting to track progress through the API, RAG, MCP, and agent sections ahead of certification attempts.

Team Impact

How this training helps your team succeed

How this training helps your team succeed in production

IT teams complete this training to move from casual LLM experimentation to Claude applications they can test, review, and maintain. The course is built around hands-on Colab notebooks, a running Claude Code project, and a two-part capstone where learners build an agentic multimedia article system, so each concept is practiced in a working build.

  • Fewer prompt regressions in production: Your team learns to replace one-off "did this output look good?" checks with test datasets and graders. They measure how often a prompt succeeds, where it fails, and what the failure patterns reveal, and they test before and after every system prompt change.
  • Safer AI-assisted automation: Engineers practice Claude Code workflows that rely on clear context, scoped tasks, verification, and review before code changes ship. They also work through tool use patterns that keep actions bounded and inspectable, from Claude requesting external actions to teams validating what happened.
  • Better cost and performance trade-offs: Team Leads gain architects who pick the right model for each task rather than defaulting to one. That means fast, inexpensive models where they fit and higher-reasoning models only where complexity requires them, plus prompt caching and task-appropriate temperature settings.
  • Reliable integrations and grounded answers: Practitioners build and validate MCP servers with the Inspector, checking tool discovery, happy-path results, verified state changes, and bounded errors. They also work with RAG plus files for grounded context, including keyword-based routing over controlled documents.

Throughout, the course reinforces one rule IT Directors will value: engineers can use AI to speed up their thinking, but they must still understand every line they ship.

After completion

Capabilities your team walks away with

Knowledge

  • How Claude Code differs from the Claude API, and where each fits in system design, including planning modes, effort levels, CLAUDE.md memory, and context control
  • How model selection, system prompts, and temperature affect output, and why production systems often combine fast models with higher-reasoning models
  • Why prompt evaluation with test datasets and graders replaces one-off "does this look good" checks, and how failure patterns guide improvements
  • How tool use, tool schemas, and multi-turn tool conversations work, plus how to assess built-in tools by risk level and approval flow
  • The tradeoffs between web search and RAG with files, and how grounded context supports production agent workflows
  • How MCP clients, servers, tools, resources, and prompts fit together, and how reusable agent skills differ from tools and always-on instructions

Ability

  • Configure Claude Code projects with custom commands and MCP servers
  • Send structured messages, stream responses into message history, and control outputs with system prompts, stop sequences, and XML-tagged prompts
  • Build test datasets and graders to measure prompt changes before and after deployment
  • Use RAG and files to provide grounded context in Claude-powered workflows
  • Test MCP servers with the Inspector across discovery, happy-path, state-change, and failure-path checks
  • Design skill-aware agent workflows and apply them in a capstone agentic multimedia article system

Readiness check

Confirm prerequisite knowledge before training begins

A short placement assessment on the CBT Nuggets assessments platform measures whether a learner already has the foundation this course assumes. IT leaders use it to put the right people in the right training — and any learner can take it right now to make sure they'll get full value from day one.

  • Questions generated from this course's own video transcripts — what gets measured is exactly what gets taught
  • Instant, per-learner results that show whether the prerequisite foundation is in place
  • Results roll up into team readiness reporting, so training hours go where they change outcomes

Secure AI Adoption and Deployment

Most development teams can connect a model API and produce an impressive demo in an afternoon. The risk for IT Directors starts when that prototype becomes a production system without an architecture, evaluation process, or security review behind it....
