For IT leaders
What IT leaders need to know before assigning this course
Java teams often have uneven skill levels: some developers handle exceptions, collections, and object-oriented programming well, while others patch code without understanding the design choices behind it. That gap leads to inconsistent code reviews and slower onboarding.
Role fit: This intermediate course suits IT Practitioners and software engineers who already write Java and need to validate Java SE 11 skills, plus developers moving into Java roles who plan to earn the OCP certification. It is not an introduction to programming.
Time investment: The course runs about 29 hours across 35 skills of roughly 45–60 minutes each. Team Leads can schedule one or two skills per week without pulling developers off delivery work.
What standardizes across the team:
- Object-oriented design, including applying the strategy pattern
- Generics and collections
- Checked vs. unchecked exceptions, and the architectural trade-offs of handling or throwing them
- Java SE 11 type-system fundamentals and development setup
- Network requests and JSON handling
Change-management note: The instruction targets SE 11 syntax specifically. The instructor flags newer shorthand that SE 11 does not support, which helps teams maintaining SE 11 codebases avoid version mismatches.
Applied practice: Guided builds, including an expense tracker, a quiz game, a web scraper, and a generative AI chatbot that uses environment-variable API key configuration, give developers applied practice beyond exam prep.
Training Managers can use Playlists to sequence skills by role and Team Reporting to track progress toward certification readiness.
