Internal Training: Creating AI-Assisted Courses and Skills
Internal Training makes it easy to turn your organization's existing documentation into structured training using AI.
Upload materials such as PDFs, standard operating procedures (SOPs), checklists, or manuals, and AI can help build your course content, media, and quizzes.
This guide walks through the AI-assisted creation process.
Step 1: Start a new course
- Sign in to CBT Nuggets.
- Select Internal Training from the left navigation menu.
- Click Create from upload.
- Upload the documents you want to use to create your training.
You can upload materials such as onboarding guides, standard operating procedures (SOPs), manuals, and other company documentation.
The upload window supports PDF, DOCX, TXT, and Markdown files.
Tip: Providing detailed source materials helps AI create more comprehensive training. Approximately 500 words of source material can support a full Skill.
Step 2: Choose Guided or Auto-build creation
- Guided (Recommended): Guided mode lets you work alongside AI to create your training. You can review the proposed Skill Plan, adjust content preferences, and approve materials throughout the process. Choose Guided if you want more control over the structure and content of your training.
- Auto-build: Auto-build generates your training automatically using the documents you upload. You won't need to make decisions during generation, but you can review and edit the completed Skills afterward. Choose Auto-build if you want the fastest, most automated creation experience.
Note: The following steps are for Guided creation
After uploading your documents, configure how your course will be generated.
- Under How should we build it?, select Guided (Recommended).
- Under Video output, choose your preferred format:
- Video: Generate narrated videos for each lesson.
- Transcript only: Generate video transcripts without rendered videos.
- None: Generate lesson content without videos.
- Optionally, enter a Target number of skills to guide how many Skills AI creates.
- Click Create course plan.
AI will analyze your uploaded content and generate a suggested course structure.
Step 3: Review your course plan
Once the initial analysis is complete, you'll be taken to the Review skill distribution page.
This page shows how AI recommends dividing your source material into individual Skills.
You'll see information such as:
- Suggested Skill titles and descriptions.
- Estimated training duration.
- Topics assigned to each Skill.
- The level of coverage for individual topics.
Customize the Skill distribution
Before approving the course structure, you can make adjustments. Edit Skills, Reshape the course plan, Regenerate topics, Review topic coverage, and more.
When you're satisfied with the course structure, click Approve & generate.
Step 4: Review individual Skill Plans
After approving the course structure, Guided creation lets you review the plans for individual Skills.
Each Skill Plan outlines the lessons and topics that AI will use to generate the training.
Review the proposed content to make sure it covers the information your learners need.
Depending on the section, you can adjust:
- Content approach: Select an alternative way to explain or present a topic.
- Media type: Choose whether to include videos, images, both, or neither.
- Content size: Select Brief, Standard, or Substantial.
- Tone: Choose Conversational, Technical, or Academic.
You can also review the Skill's duration and other generation settings.
Selecting alternative approaches
Some sections include alternative approaches to presenting the same topic.
You can select an alternative and replace the proposed section. Your previous content is preserved as an alternative, allowing you to switch back if needed.
Once you're satisfied with the Skill Plan, approve it to continue generation.
Step 5: Generate your Skills
When you're ready to generate your training, you can choose between two options:
Run Automatically
Approves the remaining generation steps and continues without requiring additional script or media reviews.
Approve & Generate
Continues the generation process while allowing you to review scripts before videos are created.
During generation, AI completes four stages:
- Building Structure: Organizes the Skill's lessons and content.
- Generating Sections: Creates the instructional content.
- Creating Assessments: Generates quiz questions based on the training.
- Assembling Skill: Combines the generated materials into a structured Skill.
You can monitor the progress from the generation dashboard.
Note: Generation time varies depending on the amount and complexity of your content. Your progress is saved, so you can leave the page and return later. You'll receive an email when your course or Skills are ready for the next step or have finished generating.
Step 6: Review generated media
If you selected a workflow that includes media review, you'll be taken to the Review media stage.
This is your opportunity to review the proposed images, video briefs, and scripts before final media generation.
Reviewing images
For image-based content, you can:
- Review the image brief describing what AI will generate.
- Review generated image previews.
- Adjust available image settings.
Reviewing videos
For video-based content, you can:
- Review the video brief.
- Expand the generated script.
- Edit or rewrite the script before final video generation.
Review each section to make sure the media accurately represents your training material.
When you're satisfied with the content, click Finalize media and confirm your selection.
AI will begin generating the final media.
Step 7: Complete and review your training
After media generation finishes, your Skill will be marked complete.
The creation dashboard tracks progress through five stages:
- Upload
- Review Skill Plan
- Generating Skill
- Review Media
- Skill Complete
Completed stages are indicated by blue checkmarks.
When a Skill is finished, click View Skill to review the completed training.
Depending on your course structure, you may need to review and approve additional Skills before the entire course is complete.
Making changes after generation
Your courses and Skills remain editable after they're created.
To edit a completed Skill:
- Open the Skill.
- Turn editing on.
- Select the content you want to modify.
- Make your changes.
You can edit or remove existing components and add your own images, videos, or other training materials.
Important: Internal Training courses and Skills are currently set to Visible by default. Review your training content and visibility settings before sharing it with learners.
Tips for getting the best results

- Review the course structure carefully. The Skill distribution determines how your training is organized.
- Choose the right content settings. Adjust tone, media, and content size based on your intended audience.
- Review generated scripts and images. Make sure the content accurately reflects your organization's procedures.
- Make final edits before sharing. AI-generated training should be reviewed for accuracy and relevance.
