AWS Launches Generative AI Developer Certification

Amazon Web Services has introduced the AWS Certified Generative AI Developer – Professional certification, a professional-level credential for developers. This new certification focuses on the skills to build, deploy, and maintain generative AI applications.
Generative AI development is currently one of the most in-demand tech skill areas. With generative AI, companies expect production-ready systems that bring tangible user outcomes and business impact. If you work mainly in cloud or software development, this certification is a natural fit.
What is the Generative AI Developer Certification?
The Generative AI Developer certification validates advanced skills in building generative AI solutions on AWS. The beta registration for the certification opened on November 18. The 205-minute exam contains 85 questions and focuses on practical development work.
AWS also introduced an Early Adopter digital badge for the first IT professionals who pass the exam. The badge appears on the AWS Credly platform.
So far, there’s no prerequisite certification. However, training for the AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) credential from CBT Nuggets will come in handy when you prepare for the Generative AI Developer certification.
From ML Specialty to Generative AI Developer
Alongside the launch of the Generative AI Developer certification, the old Machine Learning (ML) Specialty credential is set for retirement. While not a replacement, the new exam will focus more on the latest in-demand skills.
This shift reflects how teams use AI in practice today. In real-world environments, organizations rarely train large AI models entirely in-house. Instead, they rely on Amazon-managed services and cloud-based models. Tools like Amazon Bedrock allow developers to deploy and scale generative AI applications without building or training models from scratch.
While the ML Specialty exam focused on model theory and training choices, the new certification acknowledges that developers now ship AI features faster by integrating services and APIs. The ML Specialty exam will be retired on March 31, 2026.
Core Skills for the Generative AI Developer Certification
To succeed as a generative AI developer, you need to develop and build on the following skills.
Building generative AI applications using AWS managed services
Integrating core models with APIs and application logic
Using vector databases and retrieval-augmented generation
Applying prompt engineering and evaluating model output
Managing IAM, security controls, costs, and governance
How This Certification Helps You As a Developer
Obtaining the Generative AI Developer certification shows that you can take generative AI from an idea to a working system on AWS. It showcases your skills in deploying AI features that scale, stay secure, and deliver value. Early passers earn a verifiable Credly badge that can be shared on LinkedIn, online resumes, and portfolios.
