CompTIA is gearing up to release a new and improved Security+ SY0-501 exam, and CBT Nuggets is getting ready to help you take on this test.
CBT Nuggets trainer Keith Barker, who produced the CompTIA Security+ SY0-401 course for CBT Nuggets, is already working on a brand new course for the SY0-501 exam to help you be on the cutting edge of preparing for test success.
CompTIA announced that they plan to retire the SY0-401 exam sometime in July 2018, leaving you with eight months to earn your SY0-401 certification.
One question remains: With this upgrade, should you go for your SY0-401 cert? Or train for the SY0-501 certification once it comes out in October 2017?
The basic answer: It depends.
How far along are you in studying for your Security+ certification?
If you could learn all the information and feel confident in your impending success in the next eight months, then it might be a good idea to bite the bullet and take the SY0-401 exam. All certifications from CompTIA are valid for three years from the date you pass the exam, no matter if that date happens to be one day before the retirement date of the exam or at the very start of that exam’s existence. You’re still going to be certified for three years, no matter what.
You should also consider that you have access to all the study materials you could possibly need for the SY0-401, because the exam has already been around for a few years. CBT Nuggets may have you covered for the new SY0-501, but if you prefer study guides, use flashcards, or have some other alternate study method you like using, those resources for the new SY0-501 cert likely won’t exist for a while.
If you’re just getting your feet wet in terms of CompTIA’s take on security, then the SY0-501 might be worth the wait. Having the latest and greatest certification always has its appeal to employers, and there is a lot of new technology covered in the new exam that will give you an edge, including:
- Risk Management;
- The expanding roles of cybersecurity jobs (and their required skill sets);
- Replacement of ‘legacy’ technologies with newer tools;
- An expansion of spyware, ransomware, threat and attack identification skills;
- and more PKI knowledge within the cryptography realm.
So, the choice ends up being yours, but regardless of which exam you decide to take on, know that CBT Nuggets has you covered.
