New Course: AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate

CBT Nuggets trainer Anthony Sequeira released his new AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate course, providing you with the skills and knowledge you need to earn the popular AWS certification. Anthony’s course is also tremendously helpful for learners who may not be interested in certification, but do need help developing the experience needed to administer AWS products, platforms, and services in the real world.

In this 23-video course, Anthony walks through the exam blueprint, while providing guidance in using the AWS Free Tier to get the hands-on practical experience necessary for success in applying what you learn in the real world, as well as on the certification exam. Anthony tackles topics including deploying, managing, and using scalable, highly available, and fault tolerant systems on AWS, migrating an existing on-premises application to AWS, implementing and controlling the flow of data to and from AWS, and much more.

We asked Anthony about his course and how you can get more out of your CBT Nuggets Learning Experience.

Q: Why should companies train their teams on AWS? Why are AWS skills valuable to IT pros and what value does the technology bring to an organization?
Amazon Web Services (AWS) are simply amazing. There is no other way to describe it. Companies should examine the many services that exist there and figure out just what they can “offload” to the cloud. There will be at least several areas where AWS can help them dramatically. In fact, the service of AWS might allow organizations to add functionality they never dreamed possible. For example, if you want to start adding Artificial Intelligence (AI) to key functions within your enterprise, AWS can make it happen fast and can reduce the large barriers to entry in this technology area.

Q: There are a lot of cloud options out there, including Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and AWS. What makes AWS the best choice for organizations?
AWS was the first, and most IT pros consider them the best as a result. That is not to say that many companies are now using all the major cloud platforms, taking advantage of the specialties that vendors bring and reducing costs. For example, if Azure makes it cheaper to run some beefy Windows Servers, the company runs them there. Of course, these devices can communicate with AWS once those connections are built correctly.

Q: From a learner perspective, what did you keep in mind when creating this course?
Because our course in AWS Technical Essentials is awesome (thanks to Ben Finkel), I made sure to pick up from where that course left off.

Q: Any out-of-the-box tips for learners to help them get the most out of your course?
Be sure to sign up for the Free Tier to follow along with Hands-on Labs, and keep an open mind. The cloud is very unique, so be ready to think about things in a new way.

Q: What was your favorite Nugget to create in this course?
I really did love the Nuggets on automation and orchestration, like in OpsWorks, since this is just killer in the cloud.

Q: What’s the most important thing you hope learners take away from this course?
AWS provides a powerful add-on to the IT organization. It is something everyone should at least consider.

Q: What course(s) or certification(s) should learners complete before diving into your AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate course?
A requirement for this course is AWS Technical Essentials. If learners already have that knowledge, they can skip it, of course, and jump right in with SysOps Admin.

Q: What course(s) or certification(s) should learners look to jump into after they complete your AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate course?
We are creating many courses on AWS, including all the other Associate-level certs! This is important because you want knowledge of what your peers might be working on inside the cloud. For example, what are those crazy DevOps guys and girls up to? Stay tuned to find out!

Q: Where should learners start if they are brand new to the IT industry to build a career in the cloud? What training and/or certification path would you suggest they follow?
There are a lot of different paths learners can choose. But I would recommend learners start with a couple of vendor-neutral certifications and then move on to the most relevant vendors. So a good path might look like:

  1. CompTIA A+
  2. CompTIA Network+
  3. CompTIA Cloud Essentials (coming soon!)
  4. Microsoft Windows 10 (as needed)
  5. Linux Essentials (as needed)
  6. AWS Technical Essentials
  7. Learners might consider some Google Cloud Platform or Microsoft Azure courses to help diversify their knowledge and resumes too.

Q: For some of our learners, it’s easy to start training… and it might even be easy to finish training… but often, the biggest challenge is sustaining momentum in the middle of the training experience. What advice would you offer learners who are struggling to slog through a lengthy training experience?
Don’t SLOG – DANCE! Remember, a typical Nugget these days is about 13 minutes long. You can find time every day to get in at least one video Nugget, I guarantee it!

Q: It may surprise some of our learners to know that in addition to being a training development MACHINE, you’re also quite the author! You’ve written books, blog posts, articles, and more! What are some of your recent writing works that you are particularly proud of? How did you get started as a writer? How is writing different from developing a CBT Nuggets course?
Teaching and writing are equal passions, so I have been doing both for as long as I can remember! It all started with my high school newsletter! I am now writing for CBT Nuggets in a super secret upcoming project we will release soon!
