Quickstart Guide to Learning Linux

What comes to mind when you hear the words “open source?”

For most IT pros, it’s probably going to be Linux. Probably because of the popularity of the Linux operating system, which has been ported to more platforms than any other OS, including Windows!

Now that open source tech is no longer a trendy fad and can be found in just about every server room, this is a great time to add some open source savvy and skills to your IT skill set. Why not begin with the granddaddy of it all — Linux?

Not sure where to start? Let us take care of that for you. We’ve put together this quick start guide to help you get up to speed with Linux — and even prepare you to get Linux-certified if you are so inclined.

Diving into Linux as a Newbie

If you have absolutely no idea how to use Linux, that’s not a problem.

Shawn Powers’ Linux Essentials training course assumes learners have no prior experience with Linux technologies. Shawn, by the way, is a renowned Linux wiz who serves as an associate editor for Linux Journal, so you’ll be in very capable hands during your Linux journey.

Better yet, Linux Essentials course sets you up to conquer Shawn’s LPI Linux LPIC-1 and CompTIA Linux+ Prep course, which puts you on the path toward Linux certification, as it covers everything from initial setup to advanced system configuration. If you don’t want to stop there, we also have training for the LPI Linux LPIC-2 certification — which dives into processes, applications, and hands-on experience using Linux.

Last but not least, if you want to take a real-world spin with Linux, this Linux in the Real World course is for you. It goes beyond topics and theory and right into practical application! Think of it as a “virtual internship within your browser.”

Get through those courses and you’ll be ready to explore other Linux-related technologies.

Reading about Linux

Remember that we mentioned Shawn is an editor for Linux Journal? He’s also a fantastic writer who loves to spread his passion for Linux.

If you’re still on the fence about Linux, read his Linux for Mortals blog series. He shares pros and cons of Linux, how learning Linux has boosted his career… you name it.

We bet that after reading about some of his thoughts, you’ll start getting passionate about Linux, too.

If you are interested in getting certified in Linux, check out these Roadmap to Success posts:

These roadmaps lay out everything (and we mean everything) you need to know about each of the aforementioned three Linux-based certifications. You’ll learn the experience recommended for each exam, the exam format, and even the next steps you could take after certification.

You’ll really get a sense of what it takes to become a Linux pro from the ground up.

Learning Linux Outside the Nuggetsphere

We’ve outlined our Linux training already, but if you are itching to explore Linux right away, here are some tips to help you get rolling. Or check out this fun podcast that’s dedicated to helping newbies to Linux.

Outside of the Nuggetsphere, there are a ton of great Linux-based resources. Here are a few of our favorites (besides Linux Journal of course):

Getting Hands-on Experience

Seriously, have fun! It’s a lot easier to learn something new when you’re passionate about the topic and enjoy immersing yourself in the material. So, start simple. Maybe download a version of the Linux OS and go crazy.

One of the appeals of open source is that it’s cost effective and easy to access, so take advantage.

And on that note, here are five reasons Shawn wants YOU to conquer Linux. Like now. So, what are you waiting for?
