It’s back. The beep.
Every so often something, somewhere in the office, emits the slightest of beeps. More like a chirp. Like a smoke detector dying, but much quieter. It’s just faint enough to elude detection.
Actually, we know it exactly what it is. It’s a tiny device designed for this very purpose.
We even know who probably planted it. It was most certainly Steve, our video guy. Now, it’s just a question of where…
There it is again.
It’s over there in that general vicinity to my left. The noise is just slight and irregular enough to mask its exact location.
Wait. Now there’s another one behind me. This one makes the long strained sound of a cheap digital watch on its last leg.
Everyone sits at their desks working, occasionally exchanging glances, but no one moves to locate it precisely … yet. We won’t give Steve the satisfaction. Not again.
It’s April Fools’ Day 2013 all over again. We should have seen it coming.
