Let’s be honest. Learning a new technology or earning an IT certification isn’t always easy. In fact, it can be a time-consuming, challenging, and frustrating process. So, why go it alone? There’s a lot of reasons it’s beneficial (and more fun) to have a friend or coworker along for the journey. We’ve come up with a list of reasons you should get yourself a training buddy!
It’s easier to go public. One of the keys to achieving goals is to share them within your social circle or even on social media. That can be a daunting task, though. So having someone else do that alongside can make it less intimidating.
Your personal cheerleader. When you aren’t grasping a concept as well as you’d hoped, it can be discouraging. Or maybe the end seems like it’s never in sight. That’s when it’s nice to have someone there to cheer you onward. Who knows, maybe they’ll even perform a routine!
Accountability matters. Feel like skipping a training session? Think again. Your training partner won’t stand for that (hopefully…). If you slack off, you can be sure it won’t go unnoticed. And let’s be honest, guilt tripping someone can be effective. On that note…
Competition breeds success. A little friendly competition never hurts, right? Having someone training toward same goal as you, during the same time period, can provide that extra boost you need. After all, nobody enjoys finishing last.
Be prepared come test day. Studying by yourself for exams is no fun. Plus, study tools such as flash cards are far less effective when used by a single person. It’s helpful to have someone to work through concepts that might need more clarifying or reinforcement, as well.
A different perspective. As the training journey drags on, it can be helpful to approach and learn concepts from your training buddy’s perspective. In addition to helping you better understand material, doing this can help mix up your training approach and habits.
Someone to celebrate with. It’s important to celebrate your successes along your training journey, no matter how small they are — it gives you something to look forward to and is a great motivation. And let’s be real, it’s so much more fun to celebrate with others!
