During the past several weeks, we’ve covered a recipe for success when it comes to pursuing IT certifications — and now, we’re diving into the leftovers. Still hungry? Excellent! Let’s feast on some effort.
As famed anthropologist Margaret Mead said, “I learned the value of hard work by working hard.” And there might be no other realm where that is as true as it is in training and professional development. If you choose to work hard and really invest time, energy, and effort in your training, you will see results.
But what happens when your motivation dries up and you run into obstacles that rob you of your energy? Here are some ideas to recharge your effort level to get you back on track:
- Remove distractions. We all have things that distract us from training and learning, but some of those things can be managed! Close your email, turn off your phone, close the door, or get away from your desk. Each of these actions reduce the number of distractions that can get in the way of your training.
- Practice, practice, practice. Be intentional about applying what you learn. By making this extra effort, you will learn more deeply and effectively, which will make you better at your work and more likely to pass your certification exams.
- Challenge yourself. No one knows how you learn better than you do. Practice challenging yourself as you view each Nugget. Ask questions, create practical challenges using the information you’re learning, and push yourself to learn the acronyms and lingo thoroughly.
- Teach others what you’ve learned. To teach a concept, you have to know it deeply. So find someone you can teach your newfound knowledge to. And put in the effort to make sure they understand it well!
Here’s another quote to keep in mind: “Success is dependent on effort.” – Sophocles
