New: Cisco Security 300-208 SISAS

Trainer Keith Barker has completed his “Cisco CCNP Security 300-208 SISAS” training course, which centers on implementing Cisco Secure Access Solutions. The course covers topics such as Identity Services Engine, 802.1x Wired, and more. This training also prepares students to take the 300-208 exam, which is required to earn Cisco CCNP Security certification. keith-ccnp-300-208_EMAIL

Here’s a quick Q&A with Keith about his new course.

1. What was your favorite Nugget to create?

The Nugget on Posture Compliance was a lot of fun. It demonstrates how a company can enforce rules about a computer (anti-virus installed, patches up to date, etc.) before allowing that device on the network.

2. What roadblocks did you come across when creating this training and how did you overcome them?

ISE is a beast, with lots of “nerd knobs” that need to be configured and set correctly. One of the challenges was streamlining the content to make it flow through several interrelated steps.  ISE itself is a little temperamental at times, and at one point after trying MAB dozens of times without it working, I had to re-install the ISE server, and then using the same steps for MAB it worked fine on the new server. These roadblocks were overcome through determined persistence.

3. From a student perspective, what did you keep in mind when creating this course?

Getting the concepts across, along with several examples of implementing the technology. I also encourage the learners to lab this up in a practice network because one of the best ways to really learn this technology is to configure and verify it. I wanted to have these Nuggets assist the student in seeing that a process does work, which hopefully will give them confidence to push through any roadblocks they may encounter that are specific to their network devices, operating systems, servers, etc.

4. Any outside-of-the-box tips for students to get the most out of your course?

Yes! Don’t rush through this one if you plan on using this technology. Patience as you practice and master each of the concepts will be important, because with ISE there will be bumps in the road, due to the complex nature of all the pieces that interoperate with each other.

5. What’s the ONE thing you hope learners take away from this training?

That they CAN get the ISE-delivered solutions implemented and working to provide an improved security perimeter for their network.

6. What’s one real-world application someone can expect to use from this course?

802.1x authentication at the switchport, before allowing the user access into the network.  Protecting the network at the edge (the switchport) is much better and more secure than allowing virtually anyone or anything to connect to the network because a malicious user or an attacker could start reconnaissance and attacks from non-secured switchport.
