New Course: JNCIS-SEC JNO-332

Scott Morris has completed his latest CBT Nuggets training course, “Juniper Networks Certified Specialist Security (JNCIS-SEC) JN0-332.” The 22-video course covers Juniper Networks security fundamentals, including user authentication, NAT concepts, and more. Read on for a Q&A with Scott about the course, and some advice for learners.

Q: What was your favorite Nugget to create?

Scott: That’s really a tough one, because they all are fun to deliver the information about! I would probably have to say the VPN one, mostly because that (the config one) caused me such pain and frustration along the way that I was quite happy to have it successfully completed!

Q: What roadblocks did you come across when creating this training and how did you overcome them?

Scott: Many, at different times!  I had a computer system (Windows) meltdown at one point… I had a sound system (driver) meltdown at one point… I had some technical issues with the VPN lab in particular that was frustrating beyond belief because things that SHOULD have been working were not, and even things in Juniper’s sample configs weren’t working until I found one simple command that I hadn’t realized existed in an obscure location and tried it out.

I overcome most things like this with small hammers and perhaps some drinking too… that and I call friends. I have some very experienced friends. And when they are all agreeing with me that what I had done should be working, yet it’s not, it becomes frustrating! But I got to work with friends, got to dive deep into the technical steps that the router was taking while trying to figure out what it wasn’t doing correctly! And I learned a lot about how the people who coded JUNOS were (or were not) thinking!  So it was very valuable along the way! The funniest thing is that I was able to get a complicated VPN lab working just fine off the top of my head, yet the simpler one that I wanted to use for learning/demonstration purposes I could not. Go figure!

Q: From a student perspective, what did you keep in mind when creating this course?

Scott: I tried to keep in mind that not everyone has the history that I do. So I spend time talking about some of the history and practical applications of many of the things we are learning. It puts it all into perspective and hopefully gives value as well! Otherwise this stuff would all be pretty boring and I don’t do boring.

Q:Any out-of-the-box tips for students to get the most out of your course?

Scott: Practice wherever possible. Try to relate the lessons to things in your own business, or better yet, think of new and exciting ways to apply them to what you are already doing!

Q: What’s the ONE thing you hope learners take away from this training?

Scott: Nothing is unattainable, but some things require high explosives.

Q: What’s one real-world application someone can expect to use, thanks to this course?

Scott: Hopefully many things throughout the configuration portions of the course! Networks can be secured, you just have to know what you are protecting and what you are protecting against!
