Jennyfer Rusnak wasn’t a newcomer to IT when she first subscribed to CBT Nuggets earlier this year.
She’s a senior technical support engineer at Sundt Construction Inc. in Phoenix, Arizona, where she’s worked since 2012.
And at the time, she had four IT certifications: CompTIA A+, CompTIA Security+, MCITP: Windows 7 Enterprise Desktop Support Technician, and MCTS: Administering and Deploying System Center 2012 Configuration Manager.
It was a desire to sharpen her skills for higher-level positions that led her to CBT Nuggets, and with the majority of her skill set revolving around desktop support, Jennyfer set the goal of earning MCSA: Windows Server 2012 certification.
Jennyfer, who has been interested in technology for as long as she can remember, got her start in IT when she was in high school. Her school district’s IT department was hiring students for the summer, and Jennyfer was seeking a job. It turned out to be a perfect match, as the experience helped her decide on a career path.
“I got the job for knowing a little bit about computers, but over the course of the summer, I learned so much more,” Jennyfer said. “I worked there for the next two years until I left for college… it really gave me the passion to pursue IT as career.”
Jennyfer’s initial impression of CBT Nuggets was that it offered a wide range of videos, and that she wanted to watch all of them! But once Jennyfer started watching 70-410 training, she quickly settled into a routine. She said that she spent most of her weekends watching videos. She also set up a lab environment to get a hands-on feel for the material she was learning. Her study strategy is simple:
“While I am watching the videos, I have OneNote open to take notes and highlight things I need to remember,” Jennyfer said. “Once I’ve watched all the videos for the exam, I work in my lab environment with the technologies that I’m not as familiar with.”
Jennyfer passed the first of the three exams required for MCSA Windows Server 2012 certification, 70-410, on May 5. She then bested the 70-411 exam on June 27. She earned MCSA certification by conquering the 70-412 exam on July 21.
“It felt like I finally accomplished something after all the hours of studying,” Jennyfer said. “Getting this certification is something I have wanted to do for a while, but it just took focusing on it and holding myself accountable for completing it!”
Jennyfer said that CBT Nuggets provided her with the all of the training she wanted and when she needed it, which helped her study quicker and more efficiently. As a result, she said it’s a great resource for potential career growth because it enables students to learn a variety of new technologies and features that could be useful to them in the future.
Speaking of which, Jennyfer has already moved onto her next goal: she’s currently studying to take the MCSE: Desktop Infrastructure certification exam.
