Newsletter: September 2012

Welcome to the September edition of the CBT Nuggets newsletter!

Greg wows at VMworld

Trainer and virtualization expert Greg Shields is fresh off another fantastic appearance at VMworld. In fact, Greg’s presentation on “Avoiding the 19 Biggest HA & DRS Configuration Mistakes” was one of the highest-rated sessions of the 2012 event! If you didn’t get to see it in person, you can watch a video. You can also find Greg’s slides from the session here (PDF).

Nuggets goes to skola (school)

This month CBT Nuggets heard from Kim, a computer networking student at Mälardalens University in Sweden. Kim told us that the students in the department are CBT Nuggets fans, so we helped them kick off their skola year in style with some Nugget gear. See the students, and read what they have to say about CBT Nuggets training, here.

iPhone, tablet apps

We’re happy to announce that new CBT Nuggets iPhone and Android tablet apps are now available! The apps, which requires an active CBT Nuggets streaming subscription, feature a clean design, fast video playback, and mobile-to-web bookmarks. You can easily find and play videos, and an enhanced reporting system means all training minutes viewed in the app are reported to the account’s training administrator. If you had the original app, you’ll want to uninstall it and install the new one from the App Store – it’s free! Look for the iPad app soon.

Server 2012
When it comes to Microsoft Server 2012 training, we’re here for you. Don Jones’ “Server 2012 First Look” series is available for free, and training series for exams 70-410 (James Conrad); 70-413 (Don Jones); and 70-417 (Tim Warner) are currently in progress. Training for other Server 2012 exams will be underway soon.

We were excited to see Don’s expertise prominently featured in a recent article by tech journalist Joab Jackson. The article, “Windows Server 2012 embraces the data center,” landed in numerous outlets, including Computerworld, InfoWorld, and PCWorld.

See Keith on SearchSecurity

CBT Nuggets has partnered with, a leading security resource for IT professionals, to produce video tutorials. This month, trainer Keith Barker hosts a tutorial of pfSense, an open-source firewall based on FreeBSD. Watch the video at, and continue to look for a video from Keith each month.

New series released
From project management to Amazon Web Services, we released a wide array of new series this month!

PMI® Agile: Prepare for the Project Management Institute’s Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® exam with this series from Steve Caseley.

“The Project Management Institute’s Agile Certified Practicioner (PMI-ACP)® certification brings the worldwide name recognition of PMI to the Agile community,” Steve said. “The power of having PMI now involved with agile is that it provides a neutral validation of your agile skills.”

At 23 hours long, this series meets the PMI-ACP requirement of 21 contact hours in agile training – a critical step on the path to PMI-ACP certification.

Microsoft Lync Server 2010 70-664: Learn all about Lync, Microsoft’s hot all-in-one enterprise communications solution. Trainer Timothy Warner explains why Lync is such a valuable enterprise platform, delves into its core features, and prepares you to take (and pass!) the 70-664 exam.

Cisco CCNA Security 640-554: Trainer Keith Barker, author of the CCNA Security Cert Guide, helms this series. You;ll learn everything you need to know about Cisco’s new IINS 640-554 (v2) exam, and how to handle network vulnerabilities in the real world. Videos in the series map to Cisco’s official published blueprint for the new version of the exam. The previous exam, 640-553, will retire Sept. 30.

Amazon Web Services: AWS Foundations: Jeremy Cioara covers what AWS is, why it’s exciting, and how to get started using it. You’ll learn about Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2), Simple Storage Service (S3), Elastic Load Balance (ELB) capabilities, and see a real-life case study on how CBT Nuggets migrated its services to AWS.

In-progress series
Annual subscribers, you can keep up with new series as each video is released. Series recently begun by trainers include:

Juniper Networks Certified Specialist Security (JNCIS-SEC) with Michael Shannon

Last month we asked, “Which of the new or upcoming training series are you most excited about?” Microsoft Lync was top for most people, narrowly topping PowerShell 3. Happily, the Lync series has been released since last month’s newsletter — find it here!

This month, we’d like to know: How often do you train from a mobile device?
