Introduction to Server+

00:00:00 - CBT Nuggets Server+ Series-- Introduction to CompTIA
00:00:05 - Server+.
00:00:06 - Hi, my name is Michael Shannon.
00:00:08 - And on behalf of myself and everybody at CBT Nuggets,
00:00:11 - I want to welcome you and thank you
00:00:12 - for choosing CBT Nuggets for your training solution.
00:00:15 - Let's take a look at what we're going to cover in the Server+
00:00:18 - Series.
00:00:20 - In this introductory Nugget, we're
00:00:21 - going to cover three main topics.
00:00:23 - First of all, we'll get an overview of the exam.
00:00:26 - Then, we'll go through the exam objectives.
00:00:29 - And then, we'll finish up with some study tips,
00:00:31 - to help you get the most out of the Server+ Series.
00:00:35 - The CompTIA Server+ 2009 edition Certification is a global,
00:00:42 - vendor-neutral credential.
00:00:44 - It's a validation of fundamental-level server skills
00:00:48 - and knowledge used by IT professionals
00:00:51 - all around the globe.
00:00:52 - The knowledge base and the skill set measured by this exam
00:00:56 - came from an industry-wide job task analysis-- JTA--
00:01:01 - and validated through a 2008 international survey.
00:01:05 - This certification's targeted towards individuals
00:01:08 - who hopefully have about 18 to 24 months of IT experience.
00:01:13 - It's not a prerequisite, but it's highly recommended
00:01:16 - by CompTIA that you have a CompTIA A+ certification,
00:01:20 - as well.
00:01:22 - It's not a prerequisite.
00:01:23 - It's just recommended.
00:01:25 - This exam is broken up into six domains.
00:01:28 - You've got the system hardware domain, for about 21%.
00:01:32 - Software domain, for 19%.
00:01:35 - The storage domain, for 14%.
00:01:38 - IT environment, for 11%.
00:01:40 - Disaster recovery, for 11%.
00:01:43 - And then, believe it or not, almost a quarter of the exam
00:01:46 - is on troubleshooting-- probably one of the most
00:01:49 - marketable skills in the IT market today.
00:01:53 - The exam code for the Server+ exam is going to be SK0-002--
00:02:00 - if you're looking to schedule that exam.
00:02:03 - There's going to be 80 questions.
00:02:06 - And you've got 90 minutes to answer those 80 questions.
00:02:11 - You have to get a passing score of 615--
00:02:15 - that's on a scale of 100 to 900.
00:02:19 - So 900 is the highest score you need a 615 to pass.
00:02:24 - Again, A+ is recommended, but not required.
00:02:27 - And this test is offered in English and Japanese.
00:02:33 - Let's get a breakdown of the exam objectives, domain
00:02:37 - by domain.
00:02:38 - The first domain is the system hardware domain.
00:02:42 - We're going to be covering all this information in this Nugget
00:02:44 - series, by the way, which is why we're kind of going over this.
00:02:47 - This is my introduction.
00:02:48 - We'll be looking at system board types, and features,
00:02:51 - and components.
00:02:52 - Things like onboard components, like NICs, and video
00:02:56 - and audio expansion slots, the BIOS storage connectors.
00:03:00 - We'll look at deploying different chassis types
00:03:03 - and components.
00:03:05 - Cooling, form factor, power, redundant power--
00:03:08 - those types of things.
00:03:10 - We'll look at memory types and features, memory pairing, ECC
00:03:14 - versus non-ECC memory types, compatibility-- things
00:03:19 - like that.
00:03:20 - The importance of the hardware compatibility list
00:03:22 - will be covered there, as well.
00:03:24 - We'll look at different processor types and features--
00:03:28 - multi-core, multi-processor, those types of things.
00:03:31 - Installing expansion cards, and considering fault tolerance.
00:03:36 - And along with that, we'll look at installing, updating,
00:03:39 - and configuring the appropriate firmware.
00:03:42 - In the software domain, we'll look
00:03:45 - at installing, deploying and configuring, and updating
00:03:48 - our network operating system.
00:03:50 - The main network operating system
00:03:52 - that we're going to be working off of, in this Nugget series,
00:03:55 - is Windows 2008.
00:03:59 - We'll look at network operating system security
00:04:02 - software and its features.
00:04:04 - Implementing and administering network operating system
00:04:07 - management features.
00:04:09 - We'll explain the different server roles.
00:04:12 - We'll summarize server virtualization concepts
00:04:15 - and features, including the reasons for virtualization.
00:04:19 - And we'll look at common elements
00:04:21 - of networking essentials.
00:04:22 - We'll look at TCP/IP, Ethernet, virtual private networks,
00:04:27 - VLANs, and DMZs, as they relate to a firewall deployment.
00:04:31 - The third domain is storage.
00:04:33 - Our general topics being-- RAID technology
00:04:37 - features and benefits-- Redundant Array
00:04:40 - of Independent or Inexpensive Disks.
00:04:43 - Choosing the proper level of RAID-- and there's several.
00:04:46 - Installing and configuring internal storage technologies--
00:04:49 - things like, hot swappable versus non-hot swappable.
00:04:53 - SCSI, SAS, SATA, tape, optical-- those issues.
00:04:57 - And then, external storage technologies.
00:05:00 - Network-attached storage, storage area networks, WORM,
00:05:05 - optical jukebox, transport media-- those types of things.
00:05:09 - The fourth domain is information technology environment.
00:05:13 - Here, we're going to look at documentation, diagrams,
00:05:16 - policies and procedures.
00:05:18 - The industry best practices for managing your IT environment.
00:05:22 - Server location and physical environment-- for example,
00:05:25 - looking for adequate and dedicated power.
00:05:28 - Power amperage and voltage, server cooling considerations,
00:05:32 - HVAC-- things like that.
00:05:34 - Then, we'll look at methods for server access--
00:05:37 - direct and remote methods.
00:05:39 - And then finally, we'll classify physical security measures
00:05:43 - for server location.
00:05:45 - The fifth domain is disaster recovery.
00:05:47 - We're going to compare backup and restore techniques,
00:05:50 - media types, and concepts.
00:05:53 - We'll look at methodologies, like full, incremental,
00:05:55 - and differential backups, different media types.
00:05:58 - Then, we'll look at contrasting different replication methods.
00:06:02 - We'll explore data retention and destruction,
00:06:05 - or disposition concepts.
00:06:07 - And then finally, putting together a disaster recovery
00:06:10 - plan.
00:06:11 - Finally, we have the troubleshooting domain,
00:06:13 - which, as I mentioned, is almost 25% of the exam.
00:06:16 - We'll look at troubleshooting theory and methodologies.
00:06:20 - We'll talk about the troubleshooting hardware
00:06:22 - issues, the tools that you can use,
00:06:24 - and other specific methods for troubleshooting.
00:06:27 - We'll talk about software issues, tools,
00:06:29 - and methodologies.
00:06:31 - We'll look at diagnosing network problems--
00:06:33 - the tools and the methods.
00:06:35 - And then finally, troubleshooting
00:06:36 - storage problems, tools, and methodologies.
00:06:40 - Well, there's the six domains of the Server+ exam--
00:06:43 - a basic outline.
00:06:45 - I'll obviously have much more granular details,
00:06:48 - as we get into each one of these topics one at a time,
00:06:51 - throughout this remaining Server+ Nugget series.
00:06:54 - Finally, I want to give you my study tips.
00:06:56 - I've been developing CBT Nuggets for over six years now,
00:07:00 - so I have a pretty good idea of how
00:07:02 - to be successful with this particular training solution.
00:07:06 - I want to recommend highly that you set aside
00:07:09 - dedicated study time, OK.
00:07:11 - Plan your time.
00:07:13 - Make sure that when you sit down with your CBT Nugget,
00:07:16 - you have uninterrupted, dedicated time
00:07:19 - to concentrate heavily on the task at hand.
00:07:23 - This is not an easy exam.
00:07:25 - So make sure that you are taking in as much information
00:07:27 - as you can.
00:07:28 - I want to recommend also, if you do have the time, that you
00:07:32 - consider going through this series twice.
00:07:34 - Maybe going through one time and outlining it, or taking notes.
00:07:38 - And then the second time, just go through
00:07:40 - and scan each Nugget-- maybe a couple of days, or the week
00:07:43 - before you plan on taking your exam.
00:07:45 - Also, make sure you enjoy the process.
00:07:48 - The more that you're relaxed and enjoying
00:07:50 - the process of learning, the better you're
00:07:52 - going to do in the long run.
00:07:53 - I want to recommend also that you
00:07:55 - get some real-world, hands-on experience--
00:07:58 - as much as you can.
00:07:58 - Remember though-- they would like
00:08:00 - to see you have 12 to 18 months of real-world IT experience.
00:08:05 - So consider going and getting evaluation copies
00:08:09 - of operating systems.
00:08:10 - And at least, install them on the best server you can find,
00:08:14 - so you get a chance to go through some
00:08:15 - of these processes.
00:08:17 - You might want to go up on eBay, for example,
00:08:19 - and purchase a server-- maybe on a credit card.
00:08:22 - Use it for a couple of months, and then just resell it,
00:08:25 - as part of your study, and part of your preparation
00:08:28 - for the Server+ exam.
00:08:29 - With that being said, we now have a overview of the exam.
00:08:33 - We know the exam objectives-- the main objectives.
00:08:35 - And you have some good tips for getting the most out
00:08:37 - of this CBT Nugget series.
00:08:39 - Let's go ahead and jump right into our first topic.
00:08:42 - Our first topic's actually from the software domain.
00:08:45 - We're going to get our feet wet and start off slow and easy,
00:08:49 - as we look at different server roles, the purpose
00:08:52 - of those server roles, and how they interact with one another.
00:08:55 - We'll be doing that on my Windows Server 2008 system.
00:08:59 - I hope this CBT Nugget's been informative for you.
00:09:02 - I want to thank you for viewing.
00:09:04 - We'll see you in the next Server+ Nugget.
