Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) create virtual "trip lines" around your network - an IPS can automatically detect hostile traffic, sound an alarm, and block the hostile traffic's movement through your network, all while providing uninterrupted service to legitimate network users. This allows you to setup on-the-fly access list configuration on other Cisco devices to block the intruder's IP address from reaching the network.
