To cert or not to cert? That is the question

You've heard it all before - Get certified; prove your knowledge; land that promotion; make more money.  In the IT world you either have that much-sought after certification or you're working on one.  But is all the fuss worth your effort?

Linda Musthaler thinks so.  Her column in the April 28th edition of Network World says "Certifications are Worth it ...despite the gloomy economic news and flat IT spending..."

"Whether you are getting your first certification or you're adding to an already-impressive resume, certification makes you more attractive as an employee," Musthaler noted.

Employers do want individuals that have taken the time to get their certifications.  Often the human resource staff uses the certifications listed on an application or resume to go through an initial weed-out of those deemed unqualified.  People with years of experience in a given discipline are suddenly not qualified for even an entry level position at a different company without that proof of knowledge.  Certifications are the technology sector equivalent of the BA/BS in traditional business.

Now that you've assured yourself that you are going to take the time to get that next certification, which one should you get?  Which one is going to lead you to the promised land of IT nirvana?  Microsoft (MCSA and MCSE), Cisco (CCNA CCNP), Linux+ and Security+ continue to be the videos flying off our shelves right now.  There is also a big emphasis on certifications for programmers and developers (MCSD) as well as database gurus (MCDBA).  But don't take our word for it....  CertCities.com recently released a list of the 10 hottest certifications.

What's Hot?

So what did CertCities.com find out when it compiled a list of the 10 Hottest Certifications for 2003?  Without a doubt, anything Cisco and Linux related were certifications rated as the hottest in the business with Microsoft's MCSA and MCDBA coming in 8th and 10th respectively.

"A lot of employers are seeking certified database professionals," agrees CertCities.com's Contributing Editor Kevin Kohut.  Due to that demand, we're featuring MCDBA-related videos in a Special 3-Day Sale.  What a great way to save money and get a hot cert all at the same time.

Additionally, next month we will be releasing our newest video series - SQL Implementation and Design.  Instructor Jeff Abbott's enthusiastic approach to teaching database design is wonderfully refreshing.  As always, he's managed to take complex tasks and break them down into easy to understand "nuggets" of information.  Be sure to watch for this new release coming in June.

Security+ was another big winner on the hot list coming in at number two.  "...this security title from CompTIA is about to become the new darling of the certification world," reports CertCities.com's Becky Nagel.

Coincidently, our Security+ video series was just released last month and is still available through our new release discount until midnight on May 31, 2003.  Save over 50% and get one of the hottest certifications in the industry.  Be sure to use code 3REL4 to have the discount applied to your order.

How does CBT Nuggets product offering stack up to the hot list?  Very well, thank you.  With a video series currently available for 5 of the top 10 certs and an additional 4 video series in development, rest assured that CBT Nuggets is here to help you earn that next hot cert.
